Barred from Europe: 2.4m Brits caught in post-Brexit passport chaos
nglodnig replied to Social Media's topic in World News
Checked my wifes passport (I've got the new "blue" [actually more black] one) - issued march 2015, expires June 2025. So - need to get a new one before March next year but otherswise she's safe to return to Europe. -

There was no link The "P" is silent. 🙂 Yes I get it intermittently (as well eczema) but mercifully both have cleared up since I arrived here long-stay (5 months) which always seems to happen when I get here - symptoms seem to clear up weeks if not in days. Must be the warm climate (I lived in central Europe before). -
I just use a 50-cm bamboo cane slotted in the back carrier which I can deploy in seconds and growl and threaten at dogs snarling at me. Works every time.

OK, my laptop was "upgraded" in a shop in Computer Plaza Chiang Mai many years ago to Windows 10 Home (harware is too old for 11). All was fine then I saw this software protection process in task manager banging away. I eventually got in disabled in "services" and CPU is fine - but getting this msg in the bottom right corner. My "trial" copy of Excel (and I assume other Office products) is disabled which is no biggie - I hardly use it, besides I have a legit copy on another machine (not here) so I can fix that when I go back and get the licence key (multi-device) BUT question is will Windows eventually stop working altoghter? I am loathe to do a full upgrade with a "legit" copy but Googling I see licence keys for sale for a few hundred baht it seems - how dodgy are these?

Anek Bike Shop (135 6, Mueang Chiang Mai District, Chiang Mai 50100) have been very helpful with repairing/upgrading a couple of bikes of mine - they seem to have a fair stock to sell as well

Thailand braces for thunderstorms amid soaring temperatures
nglodnig replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
So - Chiang Mai and Northern Thailand generally not getting any weather today then -
This is NOT definitive but every time in the last couple of years it SEEMED to be closed after 9pm when I went through. Maybe there's a bell

For my wife we did the form by post but she only had two employers (one of them me) so not much of a chore. For myself I called them up and spent about 30-45 minutes on the phone filling the form out - but we got there in the end - all sorted. Main thing is to have your NI number to hand. The call can be expensive so I would recommend Skype. Especially as you listen to crappy music for 20 minutes waiting for somebody to pick up at their end

Coincidentally I had a tooth pulled YESTERDAY at the Chiang Mai Ram dental clinic - 1600 baht. Asked why I did't want to "repair" the tooth with root canal work and a crown - yeah, for 30,000 baht, then ten years later the crown falls apart. Better five minutes of discomfort as the dentist did a great job of extracting it. He tried to talk me into an implant but a simple denture will do me.

First British passport for second child: DNA test?
nglodnig replied to NanLaew's topic in Q&A, Ask the Consular Team
Google is a wonderful thing but then you've got me to do it for you 🙂 : https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/dna-testing-for-british-passport-applications/dna-testing-for-british-passport-applications-accessible (t appears to be voluntary. As my children are the spitting image of me my wife asked for one to prove she was the mother 🙂 -

Rocky start for Thailand’s latest alcohol tax reform
nglodnig replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
I think you'll findfthat was VAT which is taxed at the point-of-sale (when the chancellor puts VAT/fuel duty up there was a mass scramble to fill up before the increases started at midnight, often leaving petrol stations empty) Import duty is paid as its name imples at the point of entry and passed on as part of the reail price -
Border Run Nakhon Phanom 2024
nglodnig replied to AcuDoc's topic in Thai Visas, Residency, and Work Permits
My daughter and her boyfriend (and me but I didn't need extending) did this almost exactly a year ago - over the bridge (about 5-10 km north of Nakhon Phanom) paid a couple of thousand baht (or probably a couple of million kip), meal drive round then drive back over the bridge. No queues, no fuss -
Nope sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't doesn't matter what time
