Australian Embassy in Laos

Not sure if this is the right area for this topic, although I put the same post in the South East Asia forum but no replies, so apologise if in the wrong area.

I am about an hour out of Udon Thani and require some paperwork certified by the Australian Embassy which is in Bangkok, I spoke someone at the Embassy in Bangkok and they said they can assist at 1,679 baht per signed doc, or about $70 AUS per signed doc, a bit steep in my opinion, suffice to say once you add return airfares, a nights accommodation and taxi fares to and from the airport, it is getting expensive, I suppose I can take the nights accommodation out, but who wants to drive an hour to Udon Thani, fly to Bangkok, taxi it to the embassy and then do the same for the return journey all in a day, no thanks, that's a long day.

An Xpat at one of the waterholes I frequent suggested I go to the Australian Embassy in Laos to get the docs signed as its an hour 30 drive to Friendship bridge, and then about a 30 minute taxi ride to the embassy, so I am advised, and all I would have to do is get a re-entry visa for 1,000 baht, pay the taxi fare to and from the embassy, and probably pay the same for the signing of the docs at that embassy, therefore would save on airfares and accommodation by not flying to Bangkok, sounds great.

My question now is, has anybody gone over to Laos to get some docs signed at the Australian Embassy and returned same day without any hassle.

Crossing over and coming back on the same day would not be a problem.

If what you need to have e certified is for use within Thailand the problem would be that they might not be accepted since they expect them to be done at the embassy here.

Thanks Joe

The docs are for a government department back in Australia, so as we don't have any Justice's of Peace's here, apart from me signing my own and hoping no one picks up on it, I have to go to an Australian embassy here or in Laos, was only joking about signing my own name, although a JP, its not permitted.

Since posting on TVF, have found out that I will also require a visa to enter Laos on top of the re-entry permit, now that is going to be a problem because I intend to go via Friendship Bridge, and from my understanding, the only way is to fly into Vientiane and Luang Prabang Internation Airport to get a visa, that or fly down to the Australian embassy at Bangkok which would defeat the purpose.

Sometimes its a hassle living in the sticks, but wouldn't change it for quids.

You can get the Lao visa on arrival at the bridge and at other border crossings as well. Not sure where you saw info stating otherwise.

Info is here: http://www.laos-guide-999.com/visa-on-arrival.html

There is an Australian JP who lives in Chiang Mai (he did in 2016) and he signs and witnesses documents for free - but if you offer to buy him a coffee he wont refuse. He has all the stamps etc. and can give you a copy of his JP certificate.  I used him for all Aust Govt documents for Visa application etc etc.  It means you going for a trip to CM instead of BKK, but it maybe cheaper overall, especially if you have more than one document to witness or certify. Send me a PM if you want his name/number.
