A Chiang Rai sub-district has been declared a disaster zone after a landslide triggered by heavy rains swept away a house and forced neighbouring homes to be evacuated as a precaution.

No one was injured when Feilin Sae-tern’s wood-and-concrete house in Ban Pha Deua, Tambon Mae Salong Nai, Mae Fah Luang district, collapsed in the daytime landslide on Thursday.

All four members of the family had time to escape.

Rain continued to fall on Friday, widening the slide area, eroding 30 metres of roadway and threatening two other homes, whose occupants were evacuated.

Sengjian Saelee and Somchai Doungsaensuk, the heads of the evacuated families, both said they were unable to move somewhere safer, so they had to live in fear.

Feilin’s family has received initial assistance funding of Bt35,000 from the local administrative organisation and Bt30,000 from the provincial disaster prevention office to build a new home elsewhere.
