Husband and wife give pathetic excuses after taxi hijack at knife point

A taxi driver taking a husband and wife to Bang Bua Thong was held up at knife point in the early hours of Saturday morning.

But by Sunday the thieves were in custody, a reenactment was done and the taxi driver had identified his assailants.

The thieves claimed they were not going to sell the taxi - they just wanted to take some fish to the market because their own vehicle was being repaired.

Driver Thanat, 30, had picked up Suthima Kasmek, 42, and her husband Uthit, 39, in Pathum Thani and were taking them on route 345 to Bang Bua Thong.

But when they reached the Ban Kluay - Sai Noi Road Uthit pulled a knife on the driver and took his key from the ignition.

Thanat was ordered out of the cab and complied in fear. Uthit said he needed to borrow the cab to transport some stuff.

The couple then drove off in his taxi along with his phone and his wallet and amulet.

Police arrested the couple on Sunday along with the evidence. Uthit gave a series of rambling excuses saying his own vehicle was in for repairs, the garage wanted 5,500 baht, he had no money, they needed to take some fish to the Jatujak market to sell....he wasn't going to keep the taxi.

The wife was found to have two previous convictions for theft from a Ratanathibet department store.

Both were charged with stealing at night with a knife and having a weapon in the city without permission.

Thaivisa notes that stealing at night is considered a more serious crime than stealing during the day.

The incident happened around midnight on Saturday.

"The thieves claimed they were not going to sell the taxi - they just wanted to take some fish to the market because their own vehicle was being repaired". OK, that sounds reasonable by Thai logic standards:sad:

Agree with Worgeordie, car jack a taxi cos you need to take fish to the market, and cos you have put your own car in for repairs that you cannot pay for, then take the stolen vehicle home with you,i guess they reckoned nothing much would happen as they had his Amulet.

Live and learn. Anyone knows what's the reasoning behind this or am I having a farang moment?

why would that be ?

Strange one isn't it.

Not sure if UK law makes a difference between robbery, burglary or theft or if any one of the three is more serious than the other two or even if they are just expressions for the same crime ie stealing.

Can't be bothered to google it.
