NEW YORK (Reuters) - Several people were killed and numerous others injured in New York City on Tuesday afternoon after a vehicle drove down a bike path that runs alongside the Hudson River in Manhattan, police said.

The New York City Police Department, in a post on Twitter, said that one vehicle struck another, then the driver of one of the vehicles "got out displaying imitation firearms and was shot by police."

Police said the suspect was taken into custody.

A police spokesman posted a photo showing a white pickup truck on the bike path with its front end smashed. The truck had the logo of the Home Depot hardware store chain on its door.

An witness told ABC Channel 7 that he saw a white pick-up truck drive south down the bike path alongside the West Side Highway at full speed and hit several people. The witness, who was identified only as Eugene, said bodies were lying outside Stuyvesant High School, one of the city's elite public schools.

He also reported hearing about nine or 10 shots, but was not sure where they came from.

A video apparently filmed at the scene and circulated online showed scattered bikes on the bike path and two people lying on the ground.

City Hall said Mayor Bill de Blasio had been briefed about the incident. The office of New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said the governor was heading to the scene.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The striking of pedestrians by a vehicle in lower Manhattan on Tuesday was being treated as a terrorist attack, two U.S. government sources said.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation has joined the New York City police department in investigating the incident, the sources said.

Another "Allah Akbar" atrocity, and people try to defend these <deleted> !

I don't think very many people here are going to defend terrorists, extremist Islamist, or any other flavor of terrorists.

If you're suggesting it's OK to demonize all Muslim people because of Islamist terrorism, I don't see how that is fair or rational.

Have there been any clues yet on the motivation of this recent event?

Confirmed terrorism by FBI.  Probably brainwashed , young muslim men .  But it will be interesting to hear if they are US citizens and born in the US or flew in from abroad just for this attack,

"...witnesses told police they saw the driver swerve the truck to target the bus. They said the driver screamed "Allah' akbar" in the truck, then emerged carrying two fake guns -- a pellet gun and a paint gun -- and started running around before he was confronted by a nearby uniformed officer on patrol, who shot him in the abdomen..."

Eight dead in truck attack on Manhattan bike path; suspect arrested

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A pickup truck driver killed eight people and injured more than a dozen others when he drove down a New York City bike path on Tuesday afternoon in what authorities said was a terrorist attack.

The 29-year-old driver was shot by police in the abdomen and taken into custody after he crashed the truck into a school bus and fled his vehicle, New York City Police Commissioner James O'Neill told a news conference.

A spokesperson for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security called the incident an "apparent act of terrorism."

Asked at the news conference about reports that the driver shouted "Allahu Akbar" - which is Arabic for "God is greatest" - O'Neill said that a statement made by the suspect when he exited his truck and the general circumstances of the assault led investigators to label the incident a "terrorist event."

O'Neill said police would not identify the driver at this time.

The attack was reminiscent of several similar attacks carried out in Europe last year.

Governor Andrew Cuomo said the suspect appeared to have acted alone.

"There's no evidence to suggest a wider plot or a wider scheme. These are the actions of one individual meant to cause pain and harm and probably death," Cuomo said at the news conference.

Mayor Bill de Blasio called the attack a "cowardly act of terrorism."

The driver entered the bike path in lower Manhattan at 3:05 p.m., O'Neill said, adding that he was armed with a paint-ball gun and a pellet gun.

Two children and two adults were injured when the truck ploughed into the school bus, he said.

O'Neill said the suspect was driving a rented Home Depot truck, but said police would not disclose at this time where the truck was rented.

After the attack, mangled and flattened bicycles littered the bike path, which runs parallel to the West Side Highway on the western edge of Manhattan along the Hudson River.

Of the eight people killed, six were pronounced dead at the scene and two more were pronounced dead at a nearby hospital, O'Neill said.

Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro said 11 survivors with serious but non-life-threatening injuries were taken to hospitals.

U.S. President Donald Trump was briefed on the incident, White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said.

Similar attacks in Europe last year killed dozens of people.

On July 14, 2016, a suspect drove a large truck into a crowd celebrating Bastille Day in the French city of Nice, killing 86 people and injuring hundreds more in an attack for which Islamic State claimed responsibility.

Five months later a 23-year-old migrant from Pakistan ploughed a truck into a crowded Christmas market in central Berlin, killing 12 people and injuring 48.

In April of this year, a failed asylum seeker careened down a busy street in a truck in central Stockholm, crashing into a department store and killing three people in what the prime minister called a terrorist attack.

From Uzbekistan, been living in Tampa, arrived in the USA in 2010 under Obama's cultural enrichment drive. His name and photo have been released by US msm a quick google should show.

not sure if Mayor De Blasio is aware, but over in the UK they "solved" the jihadi problem by teaching dwellers of big cities that it's just part and parcel of city life to be run over by trucks driven by religious loons. Any unhappiness shown with that is deemed bigotry and cracked down on brutally. Modern times innit!

We were in New York not long after the hideous islamic terror attack on my home city of Manchester in the UK. We were regularly asked where we were from, and offered genuine words of support. I and my family reciprocate our support. We Mancunians went out on the town en-masse the weekend after the Manchester Arena atrocity, and I know New Yorkers will respond in a similar way. Viva New York! Show the big finger to those who wish to return us to the middle ages.

Nobody ever blames all Muslims as they are just as much the victims of the evil ideology as the rest of us. Islam is not fair or rational as it is based on violence and Mohammad himself said he became victorious by terror, not by turning the other cheek or loving his neighbors, but by killing. The Quran and haddith urge Jihad against unbelievers, and trouble makers in Muslim lands, and that is what we have from them.

What you don't seem to understand is that if Islam did not exist, this terrorist incident (and others) would not have taken place.

You mean kind of like the Old Testament where the heroes exterminated everyone in the villages they liberated in the name of God?

      Cowardly liberal misdirection.

Nobody is demonizing all Muslims. People like you try to use that to close down any discussion that clearly, Islam has issues. Liberals do this on all issues - try to connect one thing to another to stifle debate.

This was a Muslim attack. we don't need any clues as to his motivation. It was religion.

What does the old testament have to do with modern terrorism?

There's a tiny subset of just about every religion out there who will call up ancient texts to justify despicable actions.  Like the KKK and other racists groups throughout their history.  And those guys who bombed the King David Hotel.

Today, it's a tiny percentage of Muslims around the world that get all the press.  But they're certainly not unique.

Or, perhaps it was a reaction to bombing the crap out of, and propping up despotic dictators in, their homelands- which happen to have a higher percentage of one religion?  And making it about religion justifies continuing to bomb the crap out of them and propping up despotic regimes because, unlike those worldly factors that can be addressed, there is no way to deal with religious fanaticism other than to wipe them out?

If you're going to play the blame-a-President game, it's pretty clear that this terrorist act happened on Trump's watch.  MAGA????
