Cheers! Beloved expat bar Cheap Charlie’s to reopen

The rebuilding of the bar. Photo: Cheap Charlie’s Bar/Facebook

A Facebook post made late last night on the page for Cheap Charlie’s Bar, the beloved alleyway watering hole frequented by Bangkok expats for over 30 years, indicates that the much-missed nightlife spot will re-open soon, after it sadly closed in April.

The exciting post elicited a long string of people tagging their friends with the good news, as well as questions asking where and when the spot will reopen. Bar owner Ekkachai Budkajang is being tight-lipped with details so far, but the photo that accompanies the post shows that they are already rebuilding the actual bar, which indicates that the opening should not be too far off.

It also appears that they are building the bar in a shipping container, which elicits all sorts of guesses. Could the new bar be inside one of Bangkok’s night markets, where many food and drink establishments are housed in the re-purposed containers?

That's not a shipping container. It is way too high and the metal looks too thin. Shipping containers are made of steel. Would be good if it reopened though. Some good memories there.

By the way, have all other shops in this alley also to leave?
I went there to a good Mexican restaurant some time ago

The Thai way of attracting customers? Don't tell anyone where your business is.

or will be ???,...on the other hand, if they tell ? somebody might offer more money and take there spot !?!? T.I.T. you know ?

There is one in a shipping container down on the front in South BKK now, but cheap charlies suits most tourists these days.

Cheap Charlies was a standout. Last time I went there it was packed and no room anywhere. Good for them; not for me. Social media?????

Never understood the popularity for this place?

From their Facebook page :

New Cheap Charlie's Bar is located at The Beacon, Sukhumvit50 (200 meters, opposite Tesco Lotus)
Opening day will be informed later...
