Thousands of people flocked to the Khun Yuam district of Mae Hong Son province on Sunday to enjoy the sight of Mexican sunflowers in full bloom, causing severe traffic jams.

Khun Yuam district chief Acting Second Lieutenant Narongchai Jindaphan said traffic problems occurred mainly because motorists did not respect traffic laws.

“Please respect the rules so that everyone can avoid hours of traffic congestion,” he said.

The Mexican sunflowers have now blossomed over a vast area of Khun Yuam, attracting a huge number of tourists. The colourful spectacle usually lasts only a few weeks.

Narongchai, meanwhile, urged local operators not to overcharge tourists during the peak season.

“Offer products and services at a fair price to show your hospitality,” he said.

Have been to see the sunflowers there on 3 occasions, fortunately not weekends. The area covered by the flowers is enormous, and quite impressive. There is a school at the bottom of the hills that runs a cafe and souvenir shop for tourists to stop at. The most immaculately kept garden and buildings I've seen at a public school in Thailand, and the kids who 'work' there get to engage with Thai and foreign tourists a like. They seem to put the revenue to good use.

If the police was doing their job by controlling  the traffic and fined the violators there would be no problems and a nice extra income for the district.

Have you been to Khun Yuam?

Well i have nothing to do with the police not doing their job.

Mountain roads built for buffalo carts, not modern vehicles.

Sheer volume of traffic is the problem, nothing else.

Selfish Thais just park their cars where they please. Doesn't

matter if it blocks the road. Stop, get out of the car to walk

around and take pictures. No worries. those stuck in traffic

would probably do the same.

I have traveled to a sizable number of countries and I have to admit that the citizens of Thailand, while some of them are among the nicest people in the world, the country does have a very high percentage of people  with the lowest level of consideration and/or concern for others that I have seen anywhere.
