Highway Robbery without the Highway

Featured Replies

This is something that may give a person pause for thought.

I can make a telephone call to the US, halfway round the world, and it costs me 4 baht per minute.

I make a call to Myanmar, country right next door maybe 300 Kl's and it costs me 32 baht per minute.

Now I am not interested in international agreements and the such, what I would like to know is how the phone companies justify this?

They will tell that Myanmar puts a heavy tax on and international calls. Also, they will point out that the number of trunk lines to the USA vastly exceeds those available to Myanmar.

Next time, talk to one of the many Tai Yai in CM. They will be happy to coach you.

I call my friends and even my bank in Europe with Skype for next to nothing for years. I mean I called the telephones numbers, not Skype which is free of course.

With a Sim card from any company, it would have cost a fortune.

Skype is 13.4 per minute and 2.9 connect fee....on the pay as you go plan...to call Myanmar.

|I've called numbers in the US for free for years using Google Hangouts.

You can also get a monthly plan with Skype for about $14.00 which lets you call anywhere in the World and with it you can call any telephone in Myanmar as much as you want and for as long as you want at no extra charge.

LINE or Skype - who uses phone companies for international calls nowadays?

I talk to my son in Australia regularly on LINE - cost is buried in my monthly internet/wifi connection.
