Burma beach break......but where?

Recommended Posts

Posted

I have been to Burma literally a dozen times but never for a beach break and haven't even ventured south of Mon state. Looking at the mighty google places such as Ngapali, Chaung Tha and Ngwe Saung feature heavily but I am looking further south so what do you recommend?

Dawei seems to to be an option as possibly Myiek so anyone been to both and can recommend one over the other or anywhere else that appeals?

What am am I looking for? Certainly not an area lined with resorts and traffic to match but somewhere far more laid back with just a splattering of nightlife. Splendid seafood an absolute must and a chance for a spot of fishing would certainly appeal (I still have dreams of catching a marlin). I will be travelling January with the missus from Chiang Mai so will fly into Rangoon so somewhere within 100kms of an airport would be ideal but don't really mind if I have to venture further afield as time isn't an issue.

What do you recommend folks?

thanks

Overpriced everywhere and nothing special compared to the great islands that we have in Thailand, and many are very very quiet. Wondering why people want to go to Myanmar and eve more for beach.

Not much in the way of Beaches in Myeik unless u head to an island and there is nowhere to stay

Head to Dawei; 18 kms out of town  Muang Magan beach

White sand, crystal clear waters,  fresh seafood. there a few bungalows and 1 upscale resort at the southern end of the peninsula and  there is a small village and lots of local restaurants

The beach looks like Khao lak did 35 years ago with nothing on it.

as there is now a road being finished it will only be 4 hours t the border and another 3 to bangkok. Was told by locals all the  beach land has been brought up so in 5 years it will be built on,

GO NOW

Thanks phuketrichard I was hoping you would surface.

Strange you mention 'Khao Lak 35 years ago' as when I was typing up I actually included words to the effect of 'similar to Samui in 81' but deleted as didn't think it would much to many folks but that Muang Magan looks just the ticket and I'll certainly give it a go. Much appreciated.

the town is also very cool, with a nice market. I stayed at Shwe Moung Than hotel ( rooms on top floor are cheaper). They rent bikes as well.
you can also exit overland back to Thailand by shared taxi
Maungmagan Beach resort looked real nice with air con and cable tv ,right on the beach.Next door were 3 beach bungalow complex's with fan rooms.Am sure there more now.

I threw a dozen random Jan/Feb dates into booking.com for Maungmagan beach resort and all came up full but not overly bothered as will get to Dawei then take a ride down and sort something out. Thanks for the information, great stuff.

I've been to Maungmagan beach also. Drove down from Myawady via Mawlamyine but I hear the Dawei to Kanchanaburi border road currently takes 4 hours but this may be cut down to 1.5-2 once the road is fully surfaced. How was the road between the border at Phu Nam Ron and Dawei, Phuketrichard?

This looks like the beach in front of the resort I stayed. It's one of only 3-4 accommodation options in the area, the most well advertised one is the French-Burmese managed Coconut guesthouse, which is around 500m away from the beach but is very basic. The one I stayed at, which is beachfront is now bookable on Agoda. It's called "Maungmagan beach resort". Unfortunately, there was no wifi access and the breakfast was rather unremarkable, but this was all made up by the incredible beach right out front.

there is also a bunch of bungalows next door and also  3 kms North of the resort, towards Nabule beach..Very very basic (generator ) but right on the deserted beach

between these two places they were laying out lots for sale, there was a sales office, as i was interested in prices, but it never had anyone around.

wifi in Burma sucks everywhere, ur much better using a MPT sim for internet.
