Pracha Rat markets open in Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai province on Tuesday launched Pracha Rath markets, with one serving the entire province in front of the Government Office Complex and 25 district-level ones, as part of the government’s efforts to boost vocational opportunities for farmers, low-income earners and people without access to market space.

 

The Pracha Rath, or “State of the People”, initiative is supposed to encourage grassroots economic growth with the help of the government.

 

Provincial Governor Pawin Chamniprasert presided over a ceremony at the Chiang Mai Pracha Rath Market, which is supposed to stimulate the economy at the community level and elevate product quality. The newly opened markets saw 200 new vendors selling goods alongside pre-existing outlets. 

 

Registration for space at Chiang Mai Pracha Rath markets closed last Thursday with 2,977 people signing up.

 

The Community Development Department operates Pracha Rath markets at 2,155 locations across the country, with the goal to boost the number of vendors to 21,550 – an increase of 10 to 50 vendors per market depending on available space.

Great initiative and well done CM - leading the way again in helping the rural poor farmers etc. Some wonderful, quality produce for sale there. Much better and cheaper than in those awful, over-priced, supermarkets.

Where is it?

This has been for awhile and is a load of crap as it harms the onsite food canteen proprietors who adhere to health quality checks and have contracts to be inside. The vendors allowed to sell food as a mobile set up are not regulated food quality wise and are taking earnings from the 2 canteen restaurants mouths on site who already compete against one another. The market vulchers are allowed to sell exactly the same as the restaurant canteens there so it is totally 1000,000% unethical and unfair. Thailand thoughtless thinking as usual.Now it is going to kill more of the canteen shop owner's livelihoods as now they cannot make ends meet as is way too little. Chiang Mai Government needs a slap in the face to wake up and do something correct. Yes, I am privy to know something about this. Let them sell crafts and bulk food but nothing else.
