Talking to the family it seems that the only land of value has mud content suitable for rice planting. Sandy land, I admit not knowing what that means too sandy, is depreciated.

We got 20 ray of sandy land.

If you tell me what type of plants are suitable for such conditions I could try to stimulate some discussion.

As grollies mentioned, some trees / fruit trees can grow well on sandy soil. As seasonal crop peanuts could do also well. Cassava with irrigation is possible.
Get you a soil analysis done. Good laboratories include recommendations of suitable crops and fertiliser doses

You are planting already good seeds in my non-agricultural brain. How to locate a reliable laboratory between Roi Et & Buriram?

Is Khon Kaen between these two cities? Khon Kaen University KKU should have a soil laboratory.
Maybe ask someone to search for you in thai on the web

Spot on with cassava, it's like Bondi beach round here and the stuff grows well, never seen it irrigated.

Also eucalyptus, quicker than rubber.

Dig out a Fish Pond or 2 and stock Tilapia, a whole lot less labor intensive than rice and more potential profit once you get the hang of it.

As they say it's crap land, buy it cheap and plant sun hemp (at least that's what I think it's called). Plough it in.

Get in loads of chicken shit, rice husk, burnt rice husk. Should have some good soil in 12 months.

Pond, great idea. Scrape the bottom out after 12 months and spread round.

You won't get 20 rai done in one go but at least make a start.

Don't forget drip irrigation.

Good luck with it, can be done.

There would be many government places that do basic ones if your family can find out.

I have used a private company crop tech asia in the past for  detailed reports.

Land may be sandy , and free draining, but as the op said it is still basicly rice paddies .

Rice paddies are designed to keep water in , to grow rice , and this year thay has been a lot of rain ,good for growing rice.

You could grow cassava ,it likes sandy land ,but duing the rainy season  it will be sat in water , the field still being a rice paddy , cassava does not like to be sat in water crop might die or you will get reduced yields ,could have same problems with other crops .

So , the first thing to do find a subsoiler,or better still a chisel plough ,and some thing big to pull it and open the land up ,make it free draining 24/7 .

Then, I would go with grollies, grow some sun hemp ,and get some organic matter in to the land ,as has been written before on this forum ,Thai soils are known for being very infertile, especially sand land ,as all the nutrients soon get washed out .

Are you sure the land is sandy? Our rice land this time of year looks like it is sandy, but it is really dried out clay that is broken up, been plowed and is very powdery until one looks close you might think it was sand, as I did at first. I don't think truly sandy land would retain water, and thus would be no good for planting rice.
