According to my wife there was a huge fire about a week ago in Chiang Mai that consumed about 10 houses but I never saw anything online about it. Anyone aware of what happened or have a link?

I have had personal experience of putting out a fire with about 30 people watching. Many of those very able bodied men! I got my revenge when finished by really telling them what I thought, just about every swear word I knew included in the tirade.

There really needs to be some training on how to use fire extinguishers, a lot of fires can be extinguished if caught early enough.

Firstly most places don't have fire extinguishers and if they do, mostly not in working condition. Secondly not many people know how to use them especially in an emergency.

Most of it is common sense but then of course you need some common sense!

The one thing more frightening than a fire is seeing a group of people just watching it get bigger and bigger!

I was there last night watching the fire .

The fire engine arrived and it was unable to get down the little Soi , so the fireman unraveled their fire hoses from the fire truck to the fire , about 100 meters away .

The hoses were about 20 meters long and they had to be joined together , the fireman all unraveled the hoses , it was chaotic , there was the one piece of hose , closest to the fire .

One fireman grabbed one end of the 20 meter hose and ran to the fire , another fireman grabbed the other end of the hose and also ran to the fire , when they got to the fire front, they were shouting "Switch the water on, switch the water on " , when no water came out , a few minutes later, they both came walking back , each holding an end to the same 20 meter hose , then looked at each other and realised why there was no water coming out

The sadest thing to watch is people just standing around as a child dies from drowning.  Basic life support in many cases can improve the chances of survival.  EVERY community (especially near swimming areas) should have basic CPR, not too mention basic swimming.  <deleted> do they spend their time and money on in these places?  Beer and roosters... priorities.

For most people using a fire extinguisher is not common sense.  Most do not understand to sweep the fire at the base... most just point and shoot.  The worst is using water on oil fires.  This is where very basic training works.

Isn't it the culture here to not really get involved?

The story about the fire hose is just sad, so is the fact that the fire truck could not get down the soi.

Probably because of idiot parking?  3 year abandoned cars?  Noodle carts?

All these are just head shakers.

This was a house on fire , there was no one drowning .

I was one of those people standing around watching , what do you suggest that I should have done ?

If it was a child drowning , I could have dived in to save the child , unfortunately I am not fire retardant , so, I could not have entered the building

Non fire retardant people do enter burning buildings, happens quite often.

In this instance , the whole building was ablaze and the roof was collapsing and there were also things exploding gas canisters, I presume .

Anyone in there would have been dead already , so, there would have been no point in going in there to get burnt alive

Like always, too many gawkers getting in the way of professionals trying to do their jobs. Happens every time; accidents, fires, etc.

There were no professional firefighters there for about 20 minutes .

And the locals were using hose pipes to wet the surrounding buildings , to stop the fire spreading and throwing buckets of water over the fire and the fire extinguishers had all be used .

What else were the "gawkers" supposed to do ?

You're assuming my comment about children drowning was directed towards you and about the fire.  Wrong on both assumptions.
I have no suggestion for what you should do while standing around watching a fire.  You're an adult, make your own decision.

Again, if you derived that there was a suggestion for you to dive into a fire, that you'll have to sort out in your own head.
You do seem a bit fired up and annoyed by many of these comments and have become quite defensive.  Relax man.

OK, so the quote about a child drowning was just a random quote, and nothing to do with this thread ?

You did seem to be suggesting that the people watching were doing nothing , when they should have being doing something .

There was nothing that could have been done .

Numerous posters in this thread have commented that the "gawkers" should have done something.

Although no one has actually stated what they should have been doing .

Most of the gawkers were neighbours ,  watching to see whether the fire would spread .

What do you suggest that they do ?

Go back to their rooms and watch TV ?
