Relocation advice to Chiang Mai

Recommended Posts

Hi there,
I'll be moving from Sydney Australia to Chiang Mai in Sept 2018 and would appreciate any advice relation to:

1) Can anyone recommend any relocation companies? I'll be selling most items here in Sydney and buying new items in Chiang Mai so I will mostly be bringing personal items, books and small objects. The quantity amounts to approx 10 tea chests and 10 cartons. I've had two quotes which have both quoted 'crazy' $.

2) I am looking for somewhere in Chiang Mai where I can store these when they arrive (April 2018). The only storage company I could find was Chiang Mai Storage but they have an open warehouse system where your goods are piled in with everyone else's. I am looking for storage where my items are enclosed and separate from everyone else's.
Any advice would be much appreciated

Don't bring so much stuff so fast.  Bring what you can on your flight.  Leave the rest in Auz and slowly bring it on future return trips.  Much easier, more flexible - less commitment required.

When I moved from Japan to Chiang Mai, the moving company that picked up my boxes in Kyoto arranged to have them stored in Bangkok until we had an address to deliver them. Very low storage charge, as I recall.

How many flights do you think it will take to bring that amount over ?  and he will still have storage costs in Auz while he is bringing it in dribs and drabs.

No problem with storage costs because his sister will store the stuff for free.  It will take only 3 firsrt class flights on a major airline with their generous luggage allowances but if he flies Air Asia it will take 9.37 flights.  That is with no excess baggage fees.

Shipped our household items over here from Perth in a 20ft shipping container 4 months ago. $A6300 door to door included best insurance. Got stung with $A1900 duty tax upon arrival, which we were aware of some duty to be paid. So all up $A8200. You can ask the shipping company to hold back the container for as long as possible without incurring storage costs. This gave us 9 weeks to set up here with a place etc before delivery. Nothing broken or damaged.

I don’t know your personal circumstances so I can only generalise but my experience over about 5 years is that people’s ideas and feelings change in ways they might not expect.

You may have extensive experience in CM in which case this doesn’t apply...but if you don’t I’d be cautious. I’ve bought a house over here and now probably wish I hadn’t for eg.

Where did you buy and why are you sorry? If you don't mind my asking... How negotiable did you find the pricing to be? Feel free to PM me if this is too personal..

I plan to live in Chiang Mai for six months of the year approx. Sept to March and then travel o/s for the other six months. So I will rent in the old city initially. I may buy a condominium down the track but I am in no rush to buy especially as I will be overseas for lengthy periods.

Any feedback anyone can provide with this approach would be appreciated

Have you actually lived in C M before? If not you should wait a very long time before actually buying. Plenty of really cheap places to stay, though I disagree with living in the old city. Better off outside, but near.

If your "overseas" includes Sydney, take the advice given and bring some back each time. I can't believe that you will actually need everything in all those boxes straight away.

I can’t really think where you could live in the old city that’s not just a room....still I don’t know all the places.

A room is a room.

For six months on six months off ...if you want more than just a room...you’d need an apartment wouldn’t you.
