A friend of mine needs to get a Thai driving license.  His US license  has expired. Will he be required to take a road test and view the classroom videos?  Will he need a translator to come along?  He will be going to the Bangkok office.

Why not renew his UK licence on-line - it's free - and change address to a friends house. Then apply also on line for an IDP based on the UK one and get the friend to send both out to here?

I've changed my UK licence from here 3 times now, a renewal and 2 UK address changes, all with no problem and all done on-line.  Just need a Government Gateway i/d first, also done on line. My daughter posted them on to me.

With the UK licence and the IDP you get a 2 year licence for all the groups, no classroom or driving test at all apart from reflexes (braking a pedal when lights go red from green, then colour blindness test, and finally what I found difficult with glasses a peripheral vision test. Then you get your licence, or in my case two licences as I also had motorcycle entitlement which are separate licences in Thailand. In fact they are both due for renewal at the end of next month.

Because he doesn't have a UK license?

Procedure is easy though. Officially tests will be required, translator shouldn't be necessary.

Thanks for the responses.

Most US states will not allow online renewal if the photo on record is more than a certain number of years old, usually 10 years.  The new photo almost always needs to be taken in person at a DMV location.
