It must be strong weed.

The Chinese economy grew at almost 7% the first quarter of this year.

This year, It is expected to surpass the GDP of the 19 countries who use the Euro.

It is a monster in infant stages.

I think the very fact that we see the Chinese here; and many other countries; as tourists is reasonable evidence of economic growth. 12 years ago there were no Chinese tourists here.

There may be a bubble in their domestic housing market and debt levels are high in state owned industries; so not everything is rosy in the China garden.

Can you name one "garden" where everything is rosy?

Plus, when they arrive if they are damaged or faulty, contact the supplier and they will send a replacement free of charge and don't require you to return the old one!

Wish they's go some where else. No manners, arrogant. Who wants them, don't spend any money. Kee niow.

Well good luck.

I guess you have not seen them in groups at the seafood restaurants on WS spending big money on Lobster and bottles of wine.

Also, The real estate market would be a lot lot worse if the Chinese were not starting to snatch up properties.

This place in 10 years, maybe less, will be one big Chinatown.  They truly love it so much it is just the beginning my friend.

Yes, then they are using those properties as illegal hotels, with all profits going straight back to China while they destroy the entire area. Chinatowns tend to be alright because they are a contained small area. This time they're out like locusts, unbounded, and Thais, apart from a few fixers and cronies who rake it in, get sod all.

The problem I see is they want to see a raucous Pattaya, not participate in it. And Pattaya needs a large number of participants to flourish. Otherwise it becomes a museum.

There are already one or two museum pieces along Beach Road. Not sure I would stick the blame donkey tail on the Chinese though.

Its locust time folks. And richer than the Western Washed Up Slugs to boot. This is unacceptable.

Somehow I think (we) have, coach traffic is unsustainable, minor roads are crumbling, not being fixed, looking more like tank traps, local shop owners threatening bus drivers with 20000 fines if the leave their buses there, turning circles are forever holding up traffic, anything more will lead to disorder

So, it brings us back to the age old question. Why are such a relatively high percentage of women in Thailand so attractive? I can stand on a street corner in KL, Singapore, Taipei, LA, San Francisco, Chicago, and many other places, and it sometimes takes 10 minutes before I see a stunning gal. In Bangkok it takes 30 seconds. There are a few other spots, like New York or Hanoi, where it might take 2-5 minutes. What is up with that? Is it something they started putting in the water long ago? Is it the ethnic mix, from generations of traders coming to Thailand in previous centuries? What is it? Any thoughts or ideas on the subject?

You need to revisit Vietnam and get your loop checked

I have been there several times. I still think the Thai women are finer, though there are some stunners in Vietnam.

They've invaded Cambodia on mass Chinese casino's everywhere, just returned from Cambodia spent some time in Sihanoukville and have seen the Chinese destruction first hand. Streets and streets of casinos and hotels catering for Chinese only and not to mention Chinese restaurants which dont serve westerners.

Hope to hell similar doesnt happen in Thailand.

Five Per Cent of 1.3-billion Chinese  (650,000 people @ per capita GDP-share about $7500.00) represent a nominal 487 Billion Dollars of annual income. Forty Per Cent of America's 330 million population (annual per capita GDP share, $60,000.00) enjoy an aggregate almost Eight Trillion Dollars.

For a while to come  (as in, for around forever!), I'll be sticking with the American tourist.

Already happening. Chinese are imperialists, first they took Africa, now it's SEA. The new silk road idea is to spread to the west. Unless somebody stops them, we'll all soon be commies singing praises to Xi.

.05 x 1,300,000,000 = 65,000,000

Well no change there then Chinese wave v1.0 have done very well for themselves having changed their names to Thai names and fully integrated - I read a figure somewhere that 96% of big businesses in Thailand are owned by Thai/Chinese...

It's at least wave 4.0:

1) After the fall of Ayutthaya, Thaksin attracted mainly Chinese to build up the new capital

2) Chulalongkorn did the same to improve trade

3) a lot of ex-Kuomintang settled in the North

Estimations are that

~ 12% of Thai are ethnic Chinese

more than ~ 40% of Thai have Chinese DNA

The change to Thai names and their integration has its reason in a totally different approach to "integration" than nowadays in Europe:

There was heavy pressure on the ethnic Chinese under Rama VI and also after WW2 until the '60s by the Thai government to give up their independent Chinese schools, clan structures, clothing habits, etc.

... IMHO the outcome was far better, than what we experience nowadays in Europe:

- On one hand fully integrated (aware of their chinese roots, but feeling as  Thai, even adapting their believes to Theravada bhuddism)

- on the other hand enriching their host country with their cuisine, business sense, etc.
