DHL verses Fed X

EMS (Express Mail Service) at you local post office through Thai Post. Probably a dollar or two.

Tracking number provided.  I use this service all the time, both internationally and locally when I want to be certain of delivery.

Yes, but the price is significantly higher. Not nearly as high as FedX or UPS.  I'll go out on a limb and say that if FedX is charging $80,  EMS service will run $30-$40... but don't quote me on this.

To send an envelope to Thailand from USA US $65.00.

You must be sending verrry verrry heavy envelopes...

A kilo package from Thailand to the US is  $32.00  And that's for a full kilogram.

Are you seriously trying to convince us that it's twice as expensive for an envelope from the US to Thailand?

I'm only saying that about two weeks ago I received a large size envelope from the USA sent Priority Mail Express International (which is the what the US considers EMS) and I happened to notice at the time that the postage was US $65.00. It was far less than 1 kg. The document is about 55 pages. I had the envelope sitting in my office for a while but my wife just informed that she tossed it otherwise I would have scanned it for you.

I know how much you love to argue, so here it all is.

"The EMS service in the United States of America is Priority Mail Express International"  https://www.ems.post/en/global-network/ems-operators/ems-united-states-america

Thanks for that chart. I see that if you want 'fast delivery,' the charge IS $64 as you say.

But... if you want ordinary EMS service (6-10 days) the cost is $33. It need not be an expensive proposition.

I recently used EMS from Thailand to the US and it cost 1,350 THB for them to put a small padded envelope

weighing .045 Kg into one of their plastic EXPRESS envelopes

This price was comparable with FEDEX and since the item is still sitting in LAX Customs after arriving there on the 11th of January, I would have been better off with any other private carrier

USPS blames US Customs, US Customs blames USPS, and Thai Post refuses to even do a tracer on it

So my advice is if it is important to get to the US, then go the private courier route and leave EMS alone

Except that.........only "Priority Mail Express International" @ US $65.00 is considered EMS. The other is not ordinary EMS.

Are you really suggesting that it costs  $33 to send a letter by ordinary mail?

Wow, you really do love an argument! No I'm not. You are the one who suggested EMS. What I am saying is - that only "Priority Mail Express International" @ US $65.00 is the equivalent of EMS and can be handled through the International EMS system. The 33 USD option is not in the EMS system. EMS does not handle "Priority Mail International". That is a product of the USPS. That is all I am saying.

I don't see that anyone was asking about "Priority Mail International."

All we were talking about was EMS... which doesn't have to cost $65 to send an envelope from the US to Thailand. And THAT is all I am saying.  :)

It's not a problem. Check with your local (or Houston) post office for the exact prices.

My mail forwarding service often sends important letters to me from the US to Thailand via EMS. It's more expensive than regular 1st class mail, but not prohibitively so.

  • 4 weeks later...

If I tell you that a friend of mine had an urgent shipment held up in a US DHL warehouse for a full week before telling them to return it to sender it should give you some idea of the service issues you may face.  When they followed his irate instructions and sent it back they used.......FedEx.  That should tell you something more!
