Hi

My girlfriend is in the process of applying for a general visitor visa to come to the UK for 6 months.

I have already collated all of the information the immigration service requires from me (I have a list!). I would like to look into obtaining decent travel including medical insurance for her for the duration of her visit.

I have tried a few UK insurers but they will not cover a non UK national. I have looked into a few Thai insurers (mainly medical like BUPA etc) but the fees are high and the sum insured i.e. maximum payouts are too low assuming she requires prolonged hospital treatment. Yes, I know I am being pessimistic, but you never know.

I have also looked at a US company called World Nomads, but have heard bad things about their customer service.

Can anyone give me any sensible leads as to a reputable company (preferably UK based) who would provide a decent policy for travel insurance to a Thai national, and or a medical insurance policy for the duration of her visit.

Please do not side track with stories about administrative nightmares when dealing with the Immigration service in Bangkok. I am aware.

I just would like any leads anyone would have as to good companies, particularly if any members have used such companies in the past.

Many Thanks

Most World Nomads policies are underwritten by BUPA, I’ve heard many good reports about them.

Have you looked at insurance companies here in Thailand, they will be more used to dealing with Thais traveling overseas.

Your girlfriend may wish to wait until she has her visa before she purchases insurance especially as she intends visiting the UK for six months and insurance for that period of time is likely to be expensive.

You ask that responders to your question don’t get sidetracked with immigration comments, but this is an immigration forum and I would have thought that would be your girlfriends first priority before she sources her insurance, especially as she intends to have a six month holiday in the UK.

I found BUPA in Thailand to be fine for my wife. Never had a claim but the policy was enough for anything but the absolute case scenario. You are being very pessimistic.

I know you didn’t ask but I’d be interested in knowing what reason to return your girlfriend is relying on for her visit visa. Applying for the whole six months is unlikely to succeed unless the application is bullet proof.

I used AXA once here in Thailand, though it's a global insurer.
I insured with them prior to last minute weekend trip to Singapore, I took the insurance out on a Thursday, travelled on Friday and had a heart attack on the Saturday.
AXA covered my medical bills of about 1m Baht, best 1,000 Baht I'd ever spent.
The OP will need to be aware that many insurers, including those in the UK, will not cover trips in excess of 90 days, l think he will need a specialist underwriter.
