Buying bits on e-bay from outside Thailand.

Featured Replies

Has anyone done it lately?

Lets say the item costs

31,000- ish baht.

The company ad says 9000 baht for services tracking estimated costs etc.

Would you expect to pay import duty when it arrives here or would/should that be part of the 9000?

Edit.

Both BIL and his wife work for Thai Airways and he said he would be happy to have it sent to him as the 'payable' would be less if he turns up in uniform to collect it at the airport if required.

Thoughts??

VAT charged on item cost and shipping cost, so 31K plus 9K VAT would be on 40K

(nudge,nudge)(wink,wink)(cough,cough) usually

You never know.....

Bought a tent from the manufacturer.....They valued it at $200.....

Customs slapped on another $150.....

VAT is in the 31,000

Don't know anywhere where VAT is 30%.

Hungary is the highest at 27% but it's not coming from there.

It's not just the value of your "item" that needs to be considered here.

Different products attract differing rates of duty. That is a universal and not unique to Thailand.

Tell us what exactly this 30,000 baht "item" is and we will be better equipped to advise if you'll need to arrange an overdraft with your bank first.

I always got stuff sent by Royal Mail Tracked and Signed.

Everything arrived at home without anything to be paid when it arrived.

For this part the company refuse to use RM and only use UPS. As I've never used anything apart from RM I'm only going on reports that they deliver to the airport and you have to pick up yourself and pay what is levied on the item.

I ordered a camera from Japan on Ebay , it was 14000 baht and I did not pay anything extra when it arrived, Maybe I was just lucky.  The same price for the camera should I have bought it in Thailand was 20k , so I saved 6k .

What company handled the delivery. If you don't mind saying.

It was some years ago so I don't remember , but I will have a look at my ebay history , maybe some clues there.

AFAIK, UPS doesn't have a great Thai domestic delivery network, if any at all. Typically, if a non-dutiable item passes Thai Customs and it's not for a Bangkok destination, UPS hand it off to Thailand Post EMS for onward, provincial delivery. I think that your part will indeed be stopped at the airport for payment and collection as you suggest.

Another wrinkle in the Thai Customs duty racket is it being an 'expensive' car part, albeit used. Thai Customs have a disproportionate hard-on for even used car parts. I would try and badger the seller into using RMTS, staying that UPS delivery isn't at all guaranteed here. If they still resist, you may need to try and find the same part somewhere else. Got anyone you know flying in that can pack it in their checked baggage? Otherwise use the THAI employee get around.

You have confirmed what I've heard so may in fact go for the BIL option. He's quite senior and not shy.

The part is new and not easy to locate so will be nice and shiny so is sure to attract 'interest.' Saying that it would of no use to anyone else, but, what would that matter. ???

Thanks.

If they use a national mail service, you'll probably end up paying a few hundred baht. If its shipped using one of the thieving courier companies, you'll be bent over and thoroughly shafted.

After a few e-mails the supplier has agreed to go with RM. I'm still having it sent to the BIL in Bangkok though.

Hi All, when importing car service parts or accessories I avoid DHL and FEDEX like the plauge, they take the eyes out of you when the package arrives. From The States I use USPS, if they will not ship by this method, I will not buy. Often the quote for shipping with USPS is higher than the others, but you save on the cost's on arrival.
