Just a heads up. Currently helping my Thai stepson (Oz citizen) application for a 820 visa for his partner. Background is had Taiwanese girlfriend visiting Oz on 12 month tourist visa without 'no further stay' condition & just married. Immi has advised onshore application now taking 20 - 24 months to process. In the meantime can stay on automatically generated Bridging visa A, but if wish to travel overseas must then apply for Bridging visa B. Warning - paperwork requirements are horrendous.

That's a bloody long waiting period.

Do you mean the paperwork is horrendous for the 820 application or

the BVB?

The BVB application would be pretty straight forward I would imagine.

Immigration surely must allow for an influx of BVB applications with such long

processing times.

In your experience does this timeline vary because circumstances? The reason I ask is my sister has moved back to oz from the Uk with her British husband and dual citizen child.

She he had a job offer so they couldn’t hang around waiting for the offshore visa to come through. Now it seems if he is onshore it will be even longer.

Does the applicant get any interim work rights while the visa is being processed? Or are they just stuck in limbo?

Waiting time varies, a few years back it was 9 - 15 months.

Does your brother's wife have a 457 visa?

When applying on shore for 820/801 Visa without a 'no further stay condition', the applicant is issued Bridging Visa A for the period of determination which permits work and access to Medicare, but no other welfare services. Should applicant wish to travel overseas whilst waiting they must apply for Bridging Visa B.

I'm assuming the sister is an Oz citizen and the visa is for her husband.
