You can rent a room for 5000 thb  month and eat well for 5000 thb month.

Let's add 5000 thb more for other expenses.

You can live on Samui for 15000/month.

Doubt it.

I spend an average 1 million baht to live in Thailand A year. That also includes travel.

Im a single guy coming to Samui with a budget of 110,000thb per month. Im budgeting 30-40,000 for rent, I like a beer and nightlife,  maybe two or three nights per week, home cooking and Thai restaurants. Im also a keen gym goer and intend doing a bit of travelling in my own vehicle. I should be ok, or is my rent budget too high?

A daughter? At my age, does she have a mother?!?

Defiantly has a mother but not sure about a daughter. You know it's a fella right?

Depends what you rent. There's all types of options.

For that rent you get 3 bedroom house, as a single guy there are so many options.

How about this condo with pool and gym.

Starts at 12.900 per month.

I would be looking for one or two beds only in Lamai area. Something of the standard shown here. I think this is a project of let to buy properties though, rents are high in Samui for something decent. But I guess if your there in person ready to sign you can get a good deal, maybe for less than Im thinking.

Some muay thai gyms have monthly deals on rooms. Cheaper if you train.

Good way to meet people as well.

I wasn't necessarily looking for cheap, I want comfort and something I like. I was just wondering if my accommodation budget was to excessive.

Plenty of good rooms that are cheap too.

Excessive depends on how much money you have. High end villas will be triple your budget.

Jim, I would just book a guesthouse for 2 nights then look when there. Some guesthouses will offer weekly and monthly rates and the best prices arent on the net. Also better to inspect in person and check location.

I thought your initial post was a joke so I apologise for that.

Heaven knows what you are going to do that costs 70-80k per month.

Stay inland a bit because you will likely get the same thing for half the price. Use the savings to get a live in maid -or- just hire a daily cleaner (easy) and a driver to take you anywhere you want to go. Actually... a live in maid with a car would be the best result.

I've a friend here in Lamai (English lady) who rents out cars but she also seems to know about various properties. I guess she's been to a lot of them. PM me if you need details

Member 'Poorsucker' has given a good option and is worth consideration.

To go back to inland (and by that I mean 5-10 minutes) you could very well get a place three times better at half the price.

Usually get a better price if you negotiate in person, unless it's multinational.

No I certainly wasn't joking, Thrilled posted that he had a budget of 1million a year but didnt say where he lived. As mine is fairly similar I joined the conversation because Samui is my destination. I always think its counter productive to rent too cheap as your tempted to go out more if you dont have the home comforts. Im pretty aware of how to go about getting good deals, I was just wondering if the allocation of my budget to rent as a  was too high. I will have my own vehicle, bought and paid for so no need for drivers etc and I will definitely be looking inland a bit as you say. I will be in touch if I need help, that may be useful, thanks for the offer notmyself.

Lamai would probably be a good place to look. You can find nice villas in that area, and there is local nightlife with beer bars and entertainment. The place is also cozy, and has a nice beach, and numerous good restaurants in a variety of price levels. Some pubs have live-music, and every Saturday there's Thai Boxing a the center square.

I have been enjoying many a good weeks, and months, in Lamai. I always rented a nice fairly new aircon bungalow, with a small kitchen and fine porch, on the land side of the beach road, about 100 meters from beach, for 800 baht a day, including daily cleaning and change of bedlinned; probably cheaper if negotiating a monthly price. Many nice breakfast restaurants just round the corner on the beach road. The vicinity of 100,000+ baht a month sounds like a fair budget for Lamai, when including some nightlife and entertainment; I counted minimum 100k a month when I stayed there, however it's some years ago – OMG it was from 10 to 13 years ago...:shock1:

Other areas to look at with some bar and pub nightlife, but less than Lamai, could be Bang Rak and part of Maenam Beach. If you're into real party nightlife, then Chaweng Beach is a fine option, however it can also be visited even one stay in another place, but if using a taxi, or night song thaew, count around 500 baht fare each way.

To answer the OPs question, I find Phuket more expensive than Samui. But as has been said if you are flying Samui is expensive to get to and from.

Some nice places been and are being built on soi 1 (Lamai) which is the road cocosplash was on. Would walk into town from there because parking in town can be a nightmare. I've a saleng and even that can be a nightmare. Too many taxis but that's another thread. Land in front of Bikini bar is an option but costs 20 Baht.

If that kind of thing is not an issue the inland of the ring road will offer more and often better options.

Yes notmyself, Soi 1 is the place I will be looking at. I had a drive around there last time I was over.

40 Baht for a car but on bike there are lots of spaces to park along the road.

There is some good advice from PoorSucker posted previously.

This place is near done by the looks of it...

Garden in the back what with the land I guess. Lovely looking place but no idea who's it is. That balustrade looks odd because there is no door onto it which makes me wonder what is inside.

It's Sunday and I like Sundays so I'll carry on.

I don't know what market they are looking at but it faces the road and is not too far back from it and it has this....

Sala.jpg.54e7ca1edb65b6d0c810230dfe5ab33d.jpg

Looks like an awesome frat house to me..... perhaps I'm getting old.I do seem to be aging quite quickly these days and I don't know if I should put it down to life on Samui or that I drank out of the wrong Holy Grail.

It's one of the few places left to build on within the ring road. The road (soi 1) used to be a steam y'know. Most of the marshland behind the boxing has been built on but it's condos and such.

You know the soi 1 (Lamai - Maenam) route. A good few lovely places along there, heading as far north as I was willing to go with a saleng.
