I’m currently in the USA, but moving to Thailand. I have an early 2009 iMac OS X v.10.11.6. This iMac can no longer be upgraded to the latest OS. I’m thinking of just leaving the iMac behind and buying a new Macbook pro. I had planned on buying the Macbook directly from Apple here in the USA, and taking it with me, but am concerned about having to pay fees of some sort when bringing the new Macbook into Thailand. I recently read in another post that “when ordering from Apple (while in Thailand), shipping is free and there is no additional import fees or VAT”. I wasn’t aware of that. Should I just wait until I’m in Thailand and order from Apple there? I won’t be returning to the USA, so I don’t need a USA warranty. Also, if I do wait and purchase in Thailand, what’s the best way of moving everything from my old iMac to the new Macbook pro? I currently do regular clone backups using “SuperDuper”. Can I just take the portable HD I do the backups on to Thailand and move what I need from the HD to the new Macbook, or better to bring the iMac to Thailand and transfer info directly from iMac to Macbook? Thanks.

You're still gonna pay Thai tax and duty if you buy it in Thailand, but it's built into the price you see on the Apple website. So it's true, there no "additional" fees when it arrives. If you're carrying a brand new Macbook on your shoulder when arrive from the US no one at customs will pay any attention to it - thousands of passengers arrive every day with notebooks. Check the USA price vs the Thai price for the same model - you can easily compare the prices by going to the Apple Thailand website. Depending on where you live in the states, you will probably be paying local tax so factor that in when you compare. I would presume the US price is going to be a bit cheaper though.

For backups, just use Time Machine, SuperDuper or whatever you want to use and put it on a portable HD. Install a fresh OS on the new Macbook then later just grab the apps or files you need from the backup HD - I wouldn't recommend restoring your old iMac OS, I'm not sure it would even work on the new Macbooks.

I just bought a new MacBook Pro a few weeks ago in the USA. I know people who work at Apple. They suggested that I buy the fastest processor and maximum RAM. Refurbished on the Apple site are 15% off list price. I got the 13” with an i7 3.5 GHz processor, 16 GB RAM and the 1TB flash drive. You will need adapters too! The media adapter and at least one Thunderbolt to USB, I bought two and the Thunderbolt to Lightning adapter.

I've  bought off the refurbished stock twice from Apple with complete satisfaction.

I wish the same option was available in Thailand.
