I'm curious here......where are the signs that a title win could be five years away?

Well I think on a 3 to 4 year view FSG will turn us into an efficient business. No more 90k Carraghers on the bench or 60k subsidized Cole's playing for other teams. I think we will have an efficient cost base but a revenue short fall and capital short fall to win the premiership. However, at that point, I think that Henry has a plan to inject considerable equity cash capital (say 250m quid) into the business (not his own) to accelerate its progress. It would also need FFP to be reasonably effective in restricting City and Chelsea's cost base to something bearing a vague resemblance to their revenue.

You think!

I thought thought that Comolli has replaced those has beens with equally over paid never will be's!!

No not at all. The problem with players is that they are on long term contracts so that they are long term liabilities and it takes several years to improve efficiency.

We still have ....

Cole

Aquilani

on the books through loans....

....the other problem is that an efficient club doesnt have aging players on the bench on high salaries but who is going to buy them...

hence Carragher on 90k a week

....finally an efficient club doesnt use its annual team budget to replace aging players that have been rendered valueless as they have already sold them when they still have value....

Maxi

Kuyt

etc

We also have bought young players who we expect to come through into the first or improve within the first team Kelly, Coates, Henderson and will perhaps free up resources from within the first team itself - say Johnson - to improve the overall quality of the squad.

Basically you only need to look at how much we are spending on wages and the results we are getting to see we are not getting good value for money out of our wages. We have reduced wages by 15m since Hodgson but we were starting from a very low level of efficiency. And you only need look at Aston Villa who had an 83m wage bill last year to see that once you get into a mess on the cost side it takes a while to get out of it.

That it, the real Dunkirk spirit. How to put a very brave face on it. Basically you have the nucleus of a very good team but the squad was left weakened by Benitez, nothing happened under woy and its still weak now.

I agree you should sell Johnson now and get some cash. Kelly looks a decent player.

Apart from that we've hijacked the Arsenal thread. No point in discussing this on your thread because any blame on KK will not be tolerated!

Yes well back to Arsenal.

It remains a total mystery why Arsenal which is ranked by Forbes as the third most valuable football club in the world

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Forbes'_list_of_the_most_valuable_football_clubs

...and whose actual value is actually now well above Forbes own valuation, do not take advantage of that valuation to raise money to build up their squad. A club with their resources should not be scrambling at the edges of the CL places. And they cant claim they dont have enough money because they wish to be prudent when they can simply go out and get some more.

Arsenal invested in a new stadium, something Liverpool will have to address if they want to compete with the big boys !!! Arsenal have done well considering how little they have spent on players, unlike Liverpool who have invest in rubish like Carrol Henderson Downing Adam, and yes also Suarez the hitting the post but not the net specialist who has a conversion rate of something like 6%.

I wouldnt disagree with that assessment at all. You have been extremely well financially managed and you have financed the new stadium out of your own cash flows while remaining in the CL throughout its build and the pay down of the majority of its debt. That is why you are the third most valuable club in the world. But what is the point of being so valuable if you do not take advantage of that fact.

Based on your actual current share price you are worth 1100m quid so why not sell 10% for 100m quid to say Emirates. It isnt going to give them a big say in running the club. It isnt going to bother supporters. It would make a big difference to financing the team.

It has been done plenty of times before. Liverpool or Spurs cant do it because we would have to give someone 50% of the club for 100m.

I should think you have rendered Nev speechless - implying that he is an Arsenal fanhit-the-fan.gif .

Feel free to borrow our thread (ok - Migsy's thread) folks, while you are in such a relatively nice mood.

That's ok, probably explains why you didnt understand the concept of Arsenal selling a stake and investing the proceeds in the team. The glazier's would have sold the stake and pocketed the cash.

You're giving the current Arsenal regime more credit than they deserve I think.

Just to bring us back down to earth a little:

Chelsea are now 6 points behind, but if we assume that they are capable of having a very good run (which I will arbitrarily define as being 23 points out of 27, then we need to get more than 17 points out of 27, which should be easy for a team in form (6 wins from the last 6).

However - here is our form over the last nine games of a season over the last 5 years: total possible points 27:

2010/11 10 points

2009/10 10 points (yes I don't believe it either - how can the man still be in the job?)

2008/09 20 points (the only acceptable finish for a top four side in the last 5 years)

2007/08 18 points

2006/07 13 points

No wonder Wenger called for the team to focus after last night's win! I wonder if he produced this chart for the players.

Just to allay this pessimistic view a little - in most of those seasons the capitualation was well-signalled before this point of the season. We just need to hold the momentum for 2 or 3 more games I feel to lay the ghosts. And of course Robin has to wait at least say 5 more games before he gets injured! Also hands up all those who believe that Chelsea will have 'a very good run'

Excellent first half hour then a bit boring after that. I like boring at this stage of the season if we are sufficiently far in front.

Villa were unlucky not to have been on a better footing - should have scored at least one breakaway goal in the first 30 minutes - courtesy of Gibbs. I caught Craig Burley on Sky/True saying that we have the two best fullbacks in the PL. What's he smoking? Sagna - yes - candidate for world's best right back at the mo. Gibbs? Never - completely out of position far too often and cannot track back fast enough; ridiculous that our left winger (Gervinho) had to clear up his doo on several occasions. Give me Liverpool's Enrique any day of the week. And did you see Spurs' Cheesy Ricotta and his laughable first half performance - I'm amazed he was not taken off.

Arteta has looked like a top team midfielder in the last two games - I have previously been sceptical of his worth but he seems to be growing in confidence with a more solid defence behind him.

8 points ahead of Chelsea. If we can get another 3 points away to QPR next week I think we can jsut about call safety in having a CL place whatever happens when we play them at the Emirates later on. Third place is still going to be tough, given Spurs attractive closing fixture list of mid-tablers.

Of course we are still totally reliant on vanPersie right? Wrong. In the last 6 Arsenal PL games the team has scored 14 goals of which vanP has scored 4. He hasn't even played well in at least 2 of those games (including yesterday). Still a talisman, but I no longer hold my breath when he goes down in a tackle. TV commentators (who always like to parrot out of date popular epithets about teams) take note.
