As a foreigner the banks won't give you a credit card and probably not a debit card. Should be able to get a bank account and ATM card almost anywhere. If you're registered at your gf's place she may be putting her name on the account also and be able to access. I'd be highly suspicious.

a debit card is essentially an atm card in this day and age. should be easy to procure.

"Convenient spending with a Be1st Smart card"

The Smart card is generally sufficient within Thailand (though you probably cannot use it to pay for most hotels). As a debit card, it works like a visa electron (electronic use only). That makes it useless for things like ordering from Amazon.

Also Useless for paying for something like Airline Tickets over The Internet....

You have to register your card with the 'Verified by Visa' service. It will then be accepted world wide for online payments, flight bookings etc.

Are you saying that every foreigner that has kids here speaks English?

The debit card / ATM card stuff seems to change bank to bank and branch to branch, and same to some extent with credit cards.

My Thai son, born in Thailand, Thai ID and passport, looks Thai tried to get a second cc a couple of years back, very high profile bank, big branch, family already has several accounts at this branch. The bank lady (rude, wouldn't listen to anything) saw his name on his ID card (very typical Thai first name, very typical farang last name) instantly said 'no, farang'.

Same day he went to another branch same bank (2 km way). Polite focused bank lady checked the documents, no hesitation to accept his CC application, 10 days later he got the cc.

For clarity's sake, 99% of the cards issued by Thai banks are a 'debit' card of sorts and can usually be used for normal shopping purposes and some local online transactions.

There is a very simple reason for this, the card is a generic card whose number is linked to the account, it doesn't have your name embossed on to it.

This is usually why online airline and overseas transactions fail.

It is possible to get the issuing bank to issue a new card with your name embossed on it, but trying to convince them to is another matter.

Regarding the credit card argument, some banks will issue a proper credit card based on a security deposit being in their bank, the deposit being equal to the max credit limit available on the card.

The card can be used as a normal credit card with the usual up to 56 days credit time etc. the difference being, if you default on payment then they will get their money back via the deposit.

Not dissimilar to a secured loan / mortgage really, the credit card being secured by cash rather than property.

I have a BKK bank, SCB and Kasikorn bank debit cards. None of them have my name on the card.

When I've bought airline tickets and it asks for the cardholder's name, I fill in my name same as the account name, then it goes to my bank for verification, that has worked fine for me. I never realised there might be a problem with that.

A lot of overseas based online companies and airlines will not accept the card for payment if it has no name on it, probably because a cardholder name cannot be entered, I know of several people that have had these problems, one was based here whilst traveling a lot for business and used to try to use his card to pay for the tickets, in the end he did two things, persuaded his bank to issue a new card with his name on and also got his wife to apply for a credit card with him named as a joint cardholder.

As stated, the difference between the cards issued here (normally) and overseas is the fact there is no cardholder's name on them here, my UK one has my name, account number, sort code in addition to the 16 digit card number.

They do work fine as a debit card overseas, when used in person.

Sounds like they haven't read their own script at your branch.

For online payments i use Paypal. It is linked to my Krung Thai (visa debit card), so whenever i make a paypal payment the amount is deducted from my account.

Yes it seems like PayPal would work for Amazon purchases for the OP.

You can't pay with PayPal on Amazon

Yes, the Hipcard was the first SCB debit card I had, which (for me) wasn't enabled for internet use, but I could make purchases with it at Big C, for example.

When it expired, SCB gave me the new generation "Smart PromptCard" which is the new (for Thailand anyway, I think) chip & pin card, with a six-digit pin number, but still without my name on it.

I specifically asked for that one to be enabled for online purchases. That was the one I referred to in my last post.
