Why between the hours of 2 and 5 ?

I have asked many people regarding this. The hours allowed to sell alcohol is 12.00 - 14.00 and then 17.00 - 24.00 apparently you can apply for a license to sell other hours as well. Anyway,

Reason 1, I have heard, is that Parents should not drink alcohols around the time when they are supposed to pickup the kids from schools.

Reason 2, Its because they had a problem when staff from corporates, government etc, went out for lunch, then they had a few beers, and a few more and suddenly they never went back to work in the afternoon but stayed and was drinking in the restaurant. Then they forbid them to to sell after 14.00, they want back to work because they could not buy more..

I do not know if any of these reasons is true, but some Thai friends told me those.

I believe they changed that. But any shop apart from the big names/chains will sell you what you want in unlimited quantities at any time. Thais ignore laws that make no sense. The problem is that it

  • No alcohol would indeed make a tourturous visit to the Hard Rock  very difficult, my sympathies to the OP.

14:00hrs is a bit early for picking kids up , I would have thought 15:00 to 17:00 would have been nearer the mark.

As for people at work drinking and returning late , sack'em , then others would get the message. That's just my two'penneth.

Too logical. Like banning the sale of alcohol in shops near schools instead of the obvious asking to see the ID that everyone carries.

maybe they need some hours to sober up ;)

My understanding and correct me if I am wrong, is that the legislation prevents the sale of alcohol during the hours mentioned not the consumption

Therfore is there any problem on bringing your own ?

I usually drink wine and always take my own anyway but we are not in Bangkok

Its 11.00-14.00  not 12.00-14.00
