There are about 65.000 Indian Thais who have been here for many generations , mu guess is that they were granted Thai citizenship some time ago. Not hard to believe as when they 1st arrived here they were given most of the land along what is now Sukhumvit

They are smart operators sitting on land and holding out until they got paid stupid money by developers. Im pretty sure they dont read the TV nonsense about never invest more than you can blah blah

Probably born a Thai citizen to naturalised Thais of Indian descent. Years ago quite a few Indians took up an offer of locating to Thailand from India and were given citizenship and undeveloped land in Bangkok that is now worth a fortune.

Quite a lot of them make good money, I'm just wondering why local people already struggle with a noodle soup emporium...

Bangkok has a huge Thai/Indian community.   They own about 25% of everything in the city.   They are originally of Indian descent but have been here generations and are fully naturalised as Thais.

and the other 75% of BKK is owned by the Chinese.

since we are on the topic of race and ethnicity in Thailand, it is rare for Thai media or people to referred to a Thai politician /actor/athlete/ etc . of Chinese descent as Chinese.  the said person can be completely 100% Chinese blood , but if they speak Thai and have been here for 2 or generations or more they are considered " Thai".

Thailand has apprx. 11 million Chinese residing in LOS who considered themselves Chinese , the largest overseas Chinese community in SE Asia. we're not even including the mixed Thai/ Ch or ethnic Chinese who no longer speaks Chinese and are fully integrated into Thai society and culture. the old way of recognizing a Thai of Chinese descent was if their last name was more than 4 syllable or the first 3 to 4 letters of their Thai surname was of Chinese root ( Wong, Song, Chan, etc.)

these days, the Chinese surnames have become more elaborate and longer. the wealthy Chinese believe the longer the name, the more prestigious it is.

AN INDIAN textile businessman, who is accused of abetting drug crimes, was arrested in Bangkok on Tuesday and three locations linked to the 52-year-old were raided and assets worth Bt130 million were impounded.

The Narcotics Suppression Bureau (NSB) operation, code-named “Chaiya Sayop Pairee 61/4”, saw police officers raid a total of 30 locations across the country on Tuesday to crack down on drug traffickers and accomplices.

The Thai-speaking Indian businessman, Harpreet Singh, maintains his innocence.

He was arrested at 7am at his home in Soi Sukhumvit 39 under a warrant issued on Monday accusing him of being connected to the possession of “ice” crystal methamphetamine with the intent to sell.

Deputy national police chief Pol General Chalermkiat Sriworakhan said Singh had been linked to a drug bust involving 400 kilograms of ice on July 28.

Chalermkiat said police had found that Singh had provided financial backing to 12 suspects whom police had previously arrested in relation to that bust.

He said Singh, who owns a tailor’s shop in the Sukhumvit area and rental properties, was initially found to have wired Bt3 million to the suspects, but police suspected he had wired more money on other occasions.

He had been careful not to have drugs in his possession, so police did not found any in on Tuesday’s operation, Chalermkiat said.

NSB chief Pol Lt-General Sommai Kongwisaisuk said police had sufficient evidence, including financial transactions linked to narcotics smuggling, to secure the arrest warrant despite Singh’s declaration of innocence.

He said police would investigate further to identify more accomplices.

NSB 2 commander Pol Maj-General Yingyos Thepjamnong said Singh had allegedly provided financial assistance to five or six drug rings in Thailand and neighbouring countries for more than 10 years.

During the search of his three properties, officers found documents detailing financial transactions, leading them to impound two Sukhumvit houses along with a Mercedes-Benz E200 sedan and a Toyota CRV as well as cash and other valuables, worth a total of Bt130 million.

Yingyos said details of the operation would be announced at a press conference today.

A neighbour who asked not to be named said Singh had lived at his Bangkok house for 15 years and was involved in charitable works, so the arrest might be a business competitor’s attempt to intimidate him.

Took them 15 years to realize the tailor was a multi, multi millionare ?

Slow learners

Most probably he is a sikh. None of them lives from his "official business" but money lending, and similar gray or even darker business. This one was so stupid to compete with the local drug networks.

....would think that all foreigners should be alarmed and disgusted by the lack of due process here...

...guilty until proven innocent....???

...because Thais pointed the finger.....???

...like the dead corral case...???

...sad to see the stereotyping and racism expressed here....

...over 70 years ago India gained its independence.....and rightly so...so get over it...

....a businessman....charitable....

....the only gray area is the money lending....legal or illegal in Thailand...

....to say that he 'financed' the drug operation is slanderous at this point and an attempt to shift the blame obviously...

...this man clearly had no need to 'take on the drug cartels'.....

...did he know what the money he was lending was being used for....???

....this is what those that have been apprehended are alleging....

...odd...none of their pictures, names or addresses publicized......nor any of their assets or bank accounts seized..???

...reminds me of advice posted here once...'If you are a foreigner and drive by an accident scene, don't stop, keep driving'...

...bloody scary....

...and the Indian/Thai is now simply referred to as an Indian......

...jeez....

Albeit your view may be correct, alternatively he could be the lowest of the low, feigning charity but the worst kind of drug lord, outwardly rich successful and kind but financing untold misery and death.

As you rightly say what happened to due process?

Let us see how it all unfolds, there are not enough of the rich drug Lords Brought to their knees.
