BANGKOK, 22nd March 2018 (NNT)-Local authorities in Bangkok and its surrounding provinces are working together to strengthen their efforts to contain the rabies virus.

Bangkok Governor Pol Gen Asawin Kwanmuang, attended a meeting on Wednesday with six provincial governors and oficials from the Department of Livestock and relevant agencies to discuss ways to prevent the spread of the virus.

In Bangkok, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) launched a mobile anti-rabies program to ensure cats and dogs are immune against the disease.

Out of 300,000 doses of vaccines made available by the program, 100,000 doses have already been administered to cats and dogs in the capital city. To keep their populations under control, they will also be neutered and microchip tagged.

The BMA also denied allegations claiming the program used fake vaccines, saying that every dose has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration.

In Lopburi, the local livestock and public health offices have jointly launched a campaign to cultivate public awareness about rabies-virus although no infections have been reported in the province.

In Udon Thani, a similar campaign was also carried out in Pen district to raise public understanding about the need to protect themselves from the virus after a stray cat was found to be infected last week.

Free anti-rabies vaccines have been administered to cats and dogs from door to door in the district after the discovery. Local residents have also been told not to let their animals go outside for the time being.
