With a sand beach revealed as the Mekong River subsided for the summer season, the Nong Khai community saw opportunity to create a tourist attraction.

Residents set up 55 food stalls on the riverbank near a 500-metre-long waterfront sand dune in Ban Phan Prao village in Tambon Phan Prao of Nong Khai’s Si Chiang Mai district.

An official ceremony will launch the summertime beach on Sunday with several activities to promote tourism, including a female beach volleyball competition, jet ski race, and ladyboy beauty contest.

Locals said the Phan Prao beach will be open until early May before Mekong waters rise, inundating it again.
