An overwhelming majority of respondents to a survey by Nida Poll support the idea of revelers wearing Thai traditional costumes during Songkran festival.

Nida Poll of the National Institute of Development Administration conducted a random survey of the opinions of 1,250 people of different walks of life across the country during April 5-6 about wearing Thai traditional costumes during Songkran festival. The poll shows 84.96 percent of the respondents agree with the idea, saying that this will help conserve being Thainess and promote

Thai traditional culture. 14 percent of the respondents, however, disagree with the idea, saying that it is wasteful because the traditional costumes are expensive and they are not appropriate for water-splashing activity, according to the poll. Asked whether the respondents would like to put on the traditional costumes, 64.24 percent said they would like to because they look polite and they reflect Thainess and Thai identity.

They really are milking this costume craze/trend.

The costumes look quite nice, but surely there must be more to Thainess and Thai culture than just the clothes worn during the Ayuthaya period.

The basic but traditional Thai Pakama could be worn. Not costly as they can be had for about 120 baht in local markets. Add a t-shirt or Songkran flowered shirt and you are good to go.

Of course there are many ways to wear the Pakama.

Seems there are 14% sensible people out there. Well, 175 people out of 1,250 that represents the denizens of Thailand anyway.

That says it all!  Over 84% want an end to the annual "Water fight to the death" activity.  Some of those 84% will still be sitting in the back of pickups, acting like 2-year-olds, so Nida might as well stick their poll in the water bucket and forget about Thai Culture because most of those 84% don't give a shit!

Stupid. Traditional Thai dress is often made of silk. And water will completely ruin silk. Besides, if we can't at least see girls in see-through-wet clothes by the roadside, what is the point?

Hmmmm... do you think that the vast majority of Thais in the past were wearing silk? Silk dresses are as 'traditional' as a Beefeater uniform for the UK.

Typical Animal Farm stuff. Give them religion and culture and they will obsess on these matters, keeps their minds off the political vacuum in the country. A great way of exercising control and wasting a whole lot of time, but the latter done as a deliberate and cunning  tactic to divert minds.

These polls are a joke. they claim to have asked respondents across the country and only had 1,000 plus replies. For a country that has a population of 70 million it's a pretty meaningless poll...

what about the falang tourist idiots who wear tank tops, and shorts, and walk around like a bunch of drunken fools  throwing water on everyone? what about the drunk females who wear next to nothing yet take offense when someone grabs their butt?

They could wear traditional clothes if Songkran was observed traditionally: politely apply some of that water and paste to other's faces (yes, I have been involved in that, so it is no fantasy). Not the turning of passive aggressive into active aggressive near mayhem like goes down in Pattaya
