For me I would have chosen to go to Spain.BUT life and particulars led me here again. In many ways I'm a cultural fit but not when it come to having deep conversations with Thais. Critical thinking becomes an oxymoron.

So true ! ANY discussion with Thai is not possible for anybody not totally stupid.

Complaining changes habits and situations in most cases. The English will bear that out. They have one of the most admirable systems in the world from complaining. Most Thai people do not complain and the system stays the same.

Sent from my SM-G935F using Thailand Forum - Thaivisa mobile app

Because of Thai everything stays the same.

Street sellers are not even interested to work in a clean environment, for example look at their dirty chairs and tables, just because Thai are too stupid to think and tell something.

If everybody was complaining the whole country would be cleaner.

And it applies to everything. Every time Thai do not complain when they should, I push them to do it !

lots of truth to this  Check out the USA's status...   About 69% of Americans have less than $1,000 in their bank account, according to a new survey.   http://fortune.com/2016/09/23/majority-of-americans-are-woefully-unprepared-for-financial-emergencies/

People seem to be missing the question posed in the title.

Its not "list what you dislike about Thailand" or "where would you rather live"

Its "WHY" come to Thailand if you dislike it ?

With the natural resources, coastlines, etc some African countries have, it's a shame they can't get their act together. The Chinese are taking advantage and buying the continent. Not an improvement, either.

Brasil isnt bad either, so many places to go. Well, except the violence there, it is brutal, and after seen the riot police in action, you get the feeling how bad it is.

Pluses and minuses. After one tallies up and does the list, Thailand despite it's long list of minuses floats to top. Some can be alliviated by throwing money at it, some just have to be, like some one here well said, willfully ignored. A hard feat sometimes, but venting in TVF helps.

It took me ages too!

Thais put on a heavy facade, so it's no wonder it takes time to see behind the scenes. These days it's a bit quicker as the dirty laundry is all over social media.

There is one thing that is best with Thailand for many europeens, and it is direct flights and compare to Phillippines, Brasil and any other paradise, it is  a short flight. So in many ways Thailand win, but also loose on some important issues.. Anyway, compare to other places maybe not that bad at all. Fortaleza is among the 10 most violent citiys in the world last time I checked. Best clima I have experienced and relativ cheap.

I think the guy is right. Many did come here for sex with younger girls practically unlimited opportunities.

I also think moving beyond a sex obsessed brain is possible, but in many cases are left with these depressed, complaining, disgruntled people. Many turn to booze as their GF.

I agree, many have trouble moving on in a positive way .  (of course getting older anywhere has its challenges).   BUT,  for some that have been here and "done that" there is a better chance to still meet

a nice "settle down lady" than in many other places.  The men that succeed in finding a good partner

are often those that have learnt by mistakes (theirs, and others).  I like to call it experience.

And of course if one chooses to be a grumpy old man...well, who are we to judge ?

Some is always chasing the feeling they once had, an impossible challenge the older you get. Well I manged to turn it around, lower my expectation, and live a good settled life now for the moment. If it will last? I do not know, but boozing is not an option, so living a healthy life provides good mental health to.

It is interesting that you talk about your dogs. When it was time to leave (mainly, but not totally, for medical reasons) I felt that I was abandoning my three dogs to an uncertain future. One was my house dog and the other two were "soi dogs" which I had rescued from the usual fate of utter neglect.

At the end of the day I felt (and feel) their loss very keenly.

As for the Thai-I merely informed them that "God helps them that help themselves" which was in distinct opposition to their chronic and ineradicable Cargo Cultism.

I have asked my vet if time comes I have to leave would he put them to sleep for me,he agreed.  Do not want to leave them to get into a state that I firstly picked them up in

Or another question could be, why do so many leave their critical facilities and ability to point out reality at passport control?

Because they never had it to start with

My house dog I found as a starveling puppy in an abandoned patch of bush which was the usual dumping ground for the oh so Buddhist Thais who were perfectly capable of watching animals starve to death with the greatest of equanimity.

I wandered across to the nearest hooch and gave a little old lady a 100 Baht for good luck.

He turned out to be one of the most loyal dogs on the planet.

My soi dogs were abandoned after a restaurant shut down. They came to my place and set up guard and in return I cleaned, medicated and fed them.

They did their duty and I did mine.Great dogs.

Very insightful.  Destined to be a classic.  Sometimes you're so close to the woods you can't see the trees!
