Getting married in Phuket

Featured Replies

Hi all. This is a question for a friend of mine (yeah, really).

He and his girl went to PT to get married and they turned him away, requesting fingerprints from the US and a police report.

Any ideas?

They could register their marriage at an Amphoe.

They both would need a affirmation of permit to marry from their embassy.

Do you know what paperwork they brought?

The usual Thai id, tabien baan and passports. They got turned away from PKTown as they requested a background check for the farang. Sigh.

Good they are screening potential immigrants.
After the Africans marriage scam in Bangkok this has been implemented.
Either you have something to hide or you don't.
Thais have to jump through this same legal process if they want to immigrate to Europe, USA, Australia.

As Joe said, required is: "They both would need a affirmation of permit to marry from their embassy. "

I know when my wife and I got married, she needed a police background check, a medical checkup, proof she wasn't already married, an interview at the US Embassy and load of paperwork and fees just to get a fiancée visa, so we could go to the US to get married and that was about 5 years ago. To register our marriage here we would need to go the Foreign Ministry and the US Embassy to certify a translation of our marriage certificate from California. We haven't bothered. I found it interesting that when my wife went to change a land title, the local Amphur wanted a copy of our California Marriage Certificate. The land is in both our names now. So, it's not so easy to get married as just showing up with you ID, anywhere it seems!

I have read that foreigners in Thailand must get a police check and proof you aren't already married.
