Deputy PM Prawit says tactical integration needed to address southern issues

PATTANI, 20th April 2018 (NNT) - The Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister, Gen. Prawit Wongsuwon, said there would be a tactical integration between different units to tackle security issues in the three southern border provinces.

Gen. Prawit chaired a meeting of the government's steering committee for solving problems in the southernmost provinces on Thursday (April 19th) to follow up on the progress of policies to address unrest in the region.

The Deputy Prime Minister said he has assigned relevant agencies to integrate their operations to prevent bombing incidents and to guarantee the safety of people and property.

Regarding a report that the Malaysian government is tracking down four militants suspected of planning attacks, the Thai Defence Minister said two of the militants have never entered Thailand, while the third militant left Thailand three years ago. He said Thai authorities are hunting for the fourth person, and insisted that the four militants are not involved with the Islamic State (ISIS).

Gen. Prawit also expressed confidence the southern border province of Narathiwat will not not become a base for the ISIS group, as Thailand has stringent security measures.

. . .tactical integration? He should know, having pulled it over the eyes of the NACC for 3 farce-watching months. And, with his Safe Driving at Songkran campaign still not quite swept under the carpet, who could blame our whole-hearted (*) and multi-skilled squaddie for wanting to save the south of Thailand?

(* still waiting for Bangkok Hospital to get back to me on that one, but they did say they've confiscated his Superman cape)

To give the government some - much needed - credit, there does seem to have been progress made in the South. How much can be attributed to the government might be debated - but it's only fair to note the bright spots as well as the multiple failures elsewhere.

Why would they come to Thailand when there are a few failed states to choose from ? If one did form in Thailand, it would be a tremendous failure of a military government whose only claimed success is security.  There is just no filter between is brain and mouth.
