Eye Testing at Opticians.

Featured Replies

When I got my eyes tested back in the UK, have not for about 15 years, they had a test which sort of puffed your eyes, I think for glaucoma.

Over here in Thailand when I get my eyes tested, they don't use this method, what I want to know is, when you get your eyes tested, I do every two years, do they always check for eye problems, or should I say, does any eye problem you may have show up on these tests?

Here if you want a thorough exam you need to go to a opthamologist. In the UK you may of had a a optometrist doing the exams.

Testing for glaucoma is apparently a legal requirement in the UK.

When you have an eye health check the optometrist must, by law, examine the back of your eye. This will include looking at your optic nerve.

I doubt there's a similar legal requirement in LOS.

FWIW, I get an eye health check every couple of years when back in the UK. It's handy for comparing the corrective lens prescriptions. So far my preferred Thai optician is mirroring the UK opticians findings.

I suspect the "puff" you speak about is an eye pressure test and that is a normal procedure at any hospital or qualified opthamologist eye exam as a high pressure could indicate glaucoma or a need to treat pressure to avoid.  Be aware this air puff is not very accurate so most doctors will want to do a chair eye drop direct contact measurement if any doubt.  If indications of glaucoma they will normally use a CVFT (computer visual field test) where you react to flashing lights at different areas of vision, one eye at a time.  Not all have this ability but can send you to a place that does.
