Passersby watch in horror yesterday lunchtime as a Thai woman with financial worries threatened to jump from the sky-walk outside the National Police HQ.

Some good Samaritans including a foreigner eventually helped Payom, 33, back over the railing.

Sanook reported that she had been twice denied a 50,000 baht loan request made at the police HQ.

In December she had tried to set fire to herself.

A clothes seller at Rama 2 with two children, she said that she had been the victim of a loan shark and lost her vehicle. Banks would not help her out as she had no assets.

Police suggested that she take her grievances to the government's Damrongtham help center.

She eventually accepted the advice and went home.

No husband to help take care? Silly question. Sadly all too normal in Thailand.

Maybe he died, Barry. Now don’t you feel ashamed?!

Sad situations that occur daily, worldwide....thanks to the unreasonable fast pace of developpment, liberalisation, globalisation or consumerism, that leaves the weaker, unattended and in distress.

And where did it stand anything about that he runaway, like you suggest, or not take care about his responsibilities?

The only thing that is sad, is that you have to bash Thai people and Thailand without any kind of knowledge about what´s going on. You just think you know, and that gives you the right.

Sincerely, big thanks! One question, though. Did it upset you so much so you just felt the need to involve yourself?

It is a fact that a very large number of Thai women have to bring up their kid(s) without the aid of a father. Often, as the mother has to work, that responsibility is passed on to the kid's grandparents. There is a very good chance that the father fled the scene at some stage, probably when he took up with another woman, or he was thrown out for drinking or womanising. It's just the way it is.

If that is Thai-bashing then it's deserved. Thai men are not exactly known for commitment and responsibility, probably as a result of being raised as little princes that could do no wrong. It's part of the culture. Anyone who has lived in Thailand for any length of time knows that. If neither of those things happened, maybe the father in this case was killed in a traffic accident. Far more chance of that than him falling ill and dying. Whatever the reason, he isn't around. And that is very common in Thailand. And, as we see here, it can have serious consequences.

Grab the loan shark. Does he have a valid license to act like a bank, and is he keeping the interest at a legal level. If not book him and conficate his assets. That would be enough to help this woman and many more.

Did she go to the police station to talk to him at his 2nd job?
