Electrical outlet boxes for stud walls.

Featured Replies

Does anyone know if I can find these boxes in Thailand? If not, what can I use instead?

Never seen them here.  Do you actually have studs?  You could go with the steel box and screw in.

Bankruatsteve,

Yes. Hardwood studs. Used to US boxes for timber frame. Guess the steel boxes will be the way to go. Thanks.

You probably already know that the wood here is nothing like pine to work with.  Even if you did have the boxes with pre-set nails, you would be hard put to pound them in without pilot holes.  Come to think of it, you may want to check out the plastic boxes as you may need to drill your own holes for side mount.

I am now considering running wires through my foam insulated double gypsum walls and attaching plastic electrical outlet boxes to the gypsum. Or cutting an aperture through the outer most piece if gypsum only and setting the box in there. Why? To keep the insulation intact and the wiring away from the elements. My exterior is teak siding.

Are there any concerns with doing either of these to ways?

Yes the boxes will stick out from the wall, but these particular oulets will be hidden by bedside tables.

Suggest you go into your local electric supply shop and look at what they have. If the electric is done properly wires will be run through Yellow trunking here, they will have the boxes you require, might be a different size/shape but as you cant see them does it matter.

N/B I always use the blue water pipes as you can glue them and they cant leak if you get a water problem.

I don’t think fixing the boxes to the gypsum is a good idea.

I would fix to the studs.

Yes, will be doing so.

I've seen orange plastic boxes with the nails installed for side stud mounting.  The only place that I have really shopped for material is Home Pro so it must have been there.  But that was a long time ago, 18+ years.  I'd print out a picture and hit the big supply stores.

Personally, I would go with the most common electrical products that the sell everywhere.

You don’t want to end up a few years down the road with a compatibility problem because the manufacturer/importer abandoned the market.
