Guesthouse closures?

Featured Replies

I had a quick look and saw nothing about guest house closures in Bkk. Has Khao San area been affected by the government crackdown on unlicenced places? In Chiang Mai, at least 200 places have apparently been closed, with subsequent unemployment of many.

If they do the same in Khao San district it's going to have a significant effect on the area.

Any comment on Khao San Rd?

where in CM are they closing? Does it effect the homestays in the countryside? Is it a matter of not having licenses?

Blitzing Pattaya too.  Have a couple of chums in the business there, they are hoping for some (apparently coming) change to the Hotel Act which will allow for some places to apply for licences.  Not sure whether places have been closed down in Pattaya, not monitoring it too closely TBH, but it's sure causing a stir.  A few that I know of now advertise as monthly and yearly rental only, and have cancelled loads of bookings pending the awaited change.

Went through there a couple of weeks ago, the 200 baht room places still seemed to be advertising and operating as normal.

awe gee, thats a shame

Raids are taking place all over the country, Pattaya alone has had over 500 places raided and arrested, but local authorities "asked" media to keep it quite, hence why you do not see many reports, i am guessing Bangkok is the same.

In Pattaya, average is 50 hotels per week get raided, they are not doing it in any systematic order, but totally random to avoid being "expected"

My knowledge of the matter comes ONLY from being raided, arrested, locked up, judged and released.

In the process have met a huge number of owners in the cells, jail and in courts.
