'Bayern Munich 'end Magath reign'

BBC Sport Link.

Magath's departure could hasten Hargreaves own exit from Bayern

Bayern Munich have parted company with manager Felix Magath, according to reports in German newspaper Bild.

The Bundesliga champions have failed to win either of their first two matches since the winter break ended last week and currently lie fourth in the league.

Magath's departure is sure to heighten speculation that England midfielder Owen Hargreaves could be set to finally seal a £20m move to Manchester United.

However, a Bayern spokesman has refused to comment on the claims.

Hitzfeld back as Magath is sacked

By Andrew Scurr & Chris Ives at Sky - Created on 31 Jan 2007

Bayern Munich have announced the sacking of coach Felix Magath after a disappointing run of results.

Following Tuesday's 0-0 home draw against VfL Bochum, the German champions slipped to fourth place in the Bundesliga table.

Bayern trail joint leaders Schalke and Werder Bremen by five points after winning just two of their last five league games.

Magath took charge of the German giants in July 2004 and guided them to the league and cup double in his first two seasons.

But with a UEFA Champions League spot not guaranteed next season, Bayern decided to make the change.

"We regret having to make this decision," said chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge.

"Felix Magath has had amazing success over the last two-and-a-half years, especially winning the double two years in a row.

"But we had to take a look at recent developments and react.

"We are worried about qualifying for the Champions League next season and that was what forced our hand."

Former boss Ottmar Hitzfeld has replaced Magath at the Allianz Arena on a contract until the end of the season.

Hitzfeld had a successful spell as coach between 1998 and 2004, with Bayern winning the European Cup in 2001.
