If you don't like football - tough luck!

As the World Cup kicks off in Russia this evening Thai time one thing is for sure in football crazy Thailand for the next four and a half glorious weeks.

It will be football, football, football...and a bit more football!

Pattaya News reported that the famed Walking Street in the Thai resort was no different to any other night time entertainment area in the kingdom.

The bars and nightclubs are looking resplendent in the colors and flags of the 32 nations that will compete in the once every four years FIFA showpiece. And anticipation was at fever pitch.

The 21st edition of the world's biggest sporting event will feature 64 games over 32 days. The matches will be played in 12 stadiums across 11 cities.

There are expected to be three billion viewers worldwide with a huge number of Thais glued to TV screens both at home and out in special venues and clubs and restaurants.

Hosts Russia kick off against Saudi Arabia in the first match today starting at 10 pm Thai time. But you can warm up earlier with the opening ceremony.

For those who don't like football - and it is rumored there are a handful - your misery will end with the final on July 15th.

Pattaya News added that the local constabulary and tourist police will be patrolling to make sure everyone has a wonderful time over the next month.

There usually are three matches daily. The first kicks off at 7 pm Thai time, the second at 10 pm, and the last at 1 am. So I guess there will be quite a few venues that have received "special permission" (tied to the usual "special fee" collected by the local plod, of course) to stay open longer in order to accommodate that last match of the day.

And of course the police will be letting bars stay open for the 1am games. Provided that the correct "late night license fee" has been paid, of course.

The Russia World Cup 2018 is just hours away.  Host Russia will lift the curtain on the world’s most-watched sport event with a glittering opening ceremony at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow.

The opening show is scheduled to start at 9 pm Bangkok time and last about 30 minutes with music and hundreds of performers involved.  Russia will kick off the World Cup in an opening match against Saudi Arabia at the same venue.

The tournament will feature 32 teams, including World Cup holder Germany, competing in 64 games over 32 days.

OK if you only want to watch the first half!

Different time zones in Russia. Moscow and Bangkok is 4 hours with Bangkok being 4 hours later. Siberia it is only 1 hour difference. Spasibo!

This time I was proactive on twitter. Ah, I feel much better now.

The 'give em bread and games strategy' bears a great opportunity for the junta to delay elections again,- nobody would notice.

Can't wait. Bars are usually treated sympathetically as far as late opening is concerned. The police understand the importance of the World Cup.

It remains to be seen what would happen if a match coincided with a religious holiday though...

Supposedly the BBC is showing the games, but I cannot seem to find out where on the Beeb. Anybody know?

I do not like foreign "football" but I like soccer.

Should be a lot of fun go enjoy..

Replays should be show the following day I think. Good for the 1am game unless of course it's Brazil vs Germany or something important so will catch the lift down into the sports bar

What i want with World Cup when i'm in thailand??

Those lads have more chance of a world cup winners medal than winning anything with

the spuds.

All they had to do to win the league a couple of years back was to finish above

Leicester city but in glorious tradition effed it up!!

But the only foreign football is the american version. Wrong shaped ball, wrong rules, wrong goal shape and too much foam. They also don't use their feet very much so the name is just wildly inappropriate. Better call it overpaid fat blokes playing with an oval ball. The English Football association was started in 1863 while the US version (which is actually a rugby derivative) can barely get back to 1869.

Just ignore it.  Like Songrkan.

Easier to ignore than Songkran!

Just 22 bags of air chasing a bag of air about on a TV that can easily be switched off!

Sorted! ?
