Saw an article today that 7 Eleven accept payments using QR codes.

Although I've seen QR codes and even generated one for a website once, what's the logistics of using them to make purchases?

How does scanning one at 7 Eleven let you pay? What does your  smartphone have to be linked to for that - paypal perhaps ?

Could someone do a dummies guide type explanation please.

Many places will start accepting QR payments, but a QR code is just a way to transmit payment data.  Currently you can have PromptPay, Paytm, Alipay, Wechat Pay,  Venmo, Cryptcoins and many more QR codes.  7-11 is going to accept payment via QR code from the True Money app (which is the same company). They also accept Alipay and Wechat pay.

So, what you need to pay then is a wallet / bank account app that can pay that particular type of QR code.  Mostly Thailand is moving to the universal PromptPay QR code which can be paid by ANY Thai banking app and some e-wallet apps ( Mpay/Rabbit and Truemoney).

If you already have registered for PromptPay, you can make your own payment QR code.  Or just make any old QR code for fun.
