(Reuters) - White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders urged greater civility three days after she was asked to leave a Virginia restaurant because she worked for U.S. President Donald Trump, an incident that prompted Twitter attacks from the president on Monday.

Sanders began her Monday press briefing by relating the story of her being asked to leave the Red Hen in Lexington, Virginia, on Friday because she worked for Trump. The owner later confirmed the reasoning to media, and the incident drew praise and condemnation online for the restaurant.

"We just felt there are moments in time when people need to live their convictions," the restaurant owner, Stephanie Wilkinson, told the Washington Post on Saturday after Sanders tweeted about the episode.

"We are allowed to disagree, but we should be able to do so freely and without fear of harm," Sanders told reporters on Monday afternoon. "And this goes for all people regardless of politics. Some have chosen to push hate and vandalism against the restaurant that I was asked to leave from. A Hollywood actor publicly encouraged people to kidnap my children.

"Healthy debate on ideas and political philosophy is important, but the calls for harassment and push for any Trump supporter to avoid the public is unacceptable," she added.

Earlier on Monday, Trump lashed out at Democratic Representative Maxine Waters, who told a crowd in California on Sunday that the Red Hen's actions should be a model for resisting the president's administration. Trump responded on Twitter by calling her "an extraordinarily low IQ person."

Tensions have risen over the Republican president's "zero tolerance" immigration policy that initially led to migrant children being separated from their parents at the U.S.-Mexico border.

Trump also criticized the Virginia restaurant.

"The Red Hen Restaurant should focus more on cleaning its filthy canopies, doors and windows (badly needs a paint job) rather than refusing to serve a fine person like Sarah Huckabee Sanders," Trump said on Twitter. "I always had a rule, if a restaurant is dirty on the outside, it is dirty on the inside!"

Some critics said Sanders may have violated federal ethics rules by using her official government account to tweet about what happened at the restaurant.

Quite right.

The Tommy Robinson appreciation society’s distain for virtue signalling is spot on.

Free speech is only acceptable if you want to not serve gays, or not allow black people to wait at a table for their friends before ordering a coffee.

We must always remember that if one of your brethren decide to drive a car through a group of protesters, that it is a cry for help from a group with ‘good people’ amongst them.

It’s only terrorism if a Muslim is driving.

You obviously had a bad night’s sleep.

You’re rambling.

Great to see Trump backing up his press secretary. That, my friends, is called loyalty. Both Trump and Sanders come out of this fiasco smelling of roses. Take it from me, Sanders is now set on course for a glittering political career. She has been made a hero for bravely standing up to the hate and intolerance.

Now, it is probably for the best if the left drop this embarrassing divisiveness and work towards respecting the democratic process. Remember guys, you have an election in about 2 years. The hate and negativity shown since Trump's victory ensures the democratic party is totally unelectable, there is time to remedy this. Think positive, act positive, stop behaving like fascists. Condemn Maxine Waters for her hate speech and incitement to violence.

Now watch the Red Hen go the same way as Target, Starbucks and all the other anti-democracy retailers that paid a hefty price for virtue signalling in the public domain.

And, I was about to salute The Red Hen. Well Done. Just hope more are going to follow their lead.

Of course, Trump did not walk out in 2011.

NYT: Trump viewed Sanders as weak for not walking out during White House Correspondents dinner

President Trump viewed White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders as weak for not walking out during the White House Correspondents' Association dinner in April, according to a New York Times article published Monday.

Sanders, who sat at the head table during the annual dinner in Washington, D.C., did not walk out in protest when comedian Michelle Wolf roasted her and made fun of the administration. Wolf was criticized for taking aim at Sanders, with many accusing the former "Daily Show" writer of mocking the press secretary’s physical appearance.

Ok, here is the true reason Sanders was asked to leave:

She's a big gal, and she showed up on all-you-can-eat night.  The manager took one look at her and knew they would run out of food in twenty minutes.

?

The smart money is on this restaurant going bust soon.

Nah. They'll start serving squirrel for the Sanders/Huckabee clan.

I think Sarah Huckabilly Sanders is about to have a lot of free time on her hands, so maybe she could try her hand as a restaurateur? Or should could take up her brother's hobby of "pet care"?

Really?  it's not ok for someone to refuse to serve over being gay but it's ok to do so based on politics?  I hope the restaurant goes bankrupt for it's arrogance.

Gay/ blacks/ muslims: whole groups people!

Sara Huckesanders: one vile person!

See the difference?

Loyalty..ye gods.

The fat slapper got everything she deserved.

Everyday she stands up and lies to the world about what her incorrigible draft dodging leader says and does.

Yes but like many lawyers out there she get's paid to defend the low life scum.  Not a job anyone with a sense of moral decency would do with but if the financial rewards are high enough then there will always be someone who will hold their nose and do it!
