Recommendations for hotel/guesthouse for 1st time Bangkok visitor.

I don't plan to spend much time in my room other than sleeping, so something clean, and reasonably quiet (if that's possible in Bangkok) with ac, private bathroom, wifi, but beyond that seeking a bargain as opposed to a pricey resort.

What is always attractive is "staff is very friendly and helpful" type of place, which makes a stay much more pleasant.

(I'm driving to a neighboring state in a few days and staying overnight at a Motel 6 - although one that had reviews noting friendly staff and clean rooms).

I'm also a vegetarian, although I imagine (perhaps I'm wrong) that vegetarian Asian food shouldn't be hard to find.

Walking a bit further for a bit more quiet is fine. As mentioned, first time so I'd like to see some of the famous tourist/nightlife areas.

Would also like to view some cultural areas if possible. Night markets an interest also.

I may take a bus or train in from Swampy so if it's close to one of those routes so much the better.

Perhaps spending 3 days there before moving on.

Thanks for any recommendations.

7 THB or a 20 morosai gets you to Huai Kwang MRT,,,,four stops to Cowboy or so.  In advance low season can be had for under 300...at 350 it is still a bargain, walk in is 590....English is kind of poor...but it is a great all around area.  Rail Link to MRT is easy.  A cab to Swampy late at night cost me 240 with tip..just walk down to the corner,,,many, many out there.  After hours place to...typical BKK, for a huge city, folks are quite friendly around there.

i can't help much on cheap hotels as i rent an apartment in bkk but kudos to 'moontang' for offering up a couple choices.

i would opt for the sukhumvit soi 39 location over the huai khwang location.  the mototaxi ride to/from the MRT to the huai khwang hotel is one of the more 'exciting' rides i've had in bkk (i did it often as a GF of mine lived and worked in that area).  it might not be the best for a first time visitor.  the sukhumvit soi 39 location is a little more central as you are very near the junction of the BTS and MRT, which allows you access to most parts of the city.

Thank you and buick for the suggestions.

You bring up something I was just thinking about - "...and you can have a guest..."

I guess there's no way to know if that's the case with lodgings other than word of mouth such as this, or asking the property?

It's been a while since I stayed there, but I always found Sukhumvit Suites a great choice with friendly staff, a good breakfast and decent prices. The best thing about it is that it is located right across the road from Terminal 21 shopping mall, the Asoke skytrain terminal and also the Sukhumvit MRT station.

If you are traveling alone, simply indicate when you book your room that the number of occupants is 2 - you should have no problem in that case.
