We are planning on taking the night train, second class sleeper, from Bangkok to Chumphon and then take the ferry to Koh Tao and Koh Phangan.

Do we really need to buy tickets in advance???

It is generally a good idea as the tickets do sell out, sometimes a few days in advance. You could always try your luck and try to get them on the day but I have been disappointed several times doing this.

I took the night time 2nd class sleeper train two years ago and booked in advance.

Upon arrival at the railway station, there were so many disappointed travelers not being able to secure a ticket on the train.

The train was full.

You are well advised to book early.

When you want to travel is also an important factor. Train tickets for travel during holiday weekend or festivals tend to book up early. Tickets go on sale 60 days in advance the date of travel.

My last trip to Nong Khai I could only book 3rd class seats. Straight back wooden bench seat with 1 inch padding. Peole who did not book in time had the 'pleasure' of standing for 12 hours for the same fare. 'Nuff said!

I know a Bangkok travel agent who will secure your tickets and EMS them to you for no extra cost beyond the price of the ticket (the railway gives them a discount to offset their EMS expenses). PM me if interested.

i definitely recommend reserving in advance. especially if you plan on traveling over the upcoming chinese new year. the whole country will be on the move again.

Yeah, those seats are pretty bad. I also hate having to compromise and go 2nd class sleep with A/C if the fan sleepers are booked out. The A/C is too cold and really dries you eyes out. I still, after countless journeys, love to stick my head out of the big drop down windows that the fan seats have and take in the sights, sounds, and smells.
