A German man who allegedly overstayed his entry visa for nine years was caught in a weekly operation that also nabbed 55 other foreigners who were living illegally in the kingdom.

Pol Maj Gen Surachet Hakpal, deputy tourist police chief, said at a 2am press conference that tourist police joined other agencies to check 74 locations around the country, including hotels, schools and language institutes, on Thursday.

He said the operation saw 56 foreigners arrested, 11 for overstaying their visa, 41 for having unlawfully entered the kingdom and four others on other charges.

Of the overstaying foreigners, a German allegedly lived in Thailand for nine years after his visa expired, Surachet added.

Surachet said the operation focused on checking English-language schools because many foreigners, who do not live in the kingdom lawfully, like to disguise themselves as English teachers.

Surachet added that he has carried out 31 operations so far and has searched 3,947 locations and arrested 1,724 foreigners.

I am guessing he may have a family, a house and the whole nine yards. Part of me feels sympathy for the man, but he has no one to blame but himself. Sad really.

Very true...rather amusing to just dress to impress and pose when it's obvious that to round up a harmless bunch of illegals they did not call in members of the local GsG9, SAS, (DEA) CLET, SWAt or GIGN,  team ?

Just your assumption?

All badges on thai police and army uniform must be certified. You cannot wear what you want .

Nine years in the shadows.  Wonder how survived.  When I think of outlaw, I think of a masked man to steals money from schoolmarms, not some guy who just got tired of doing visa runs.   He should have kept his status clean and moved to a neighboring country where it is easier to survive legally.

I agree. The cost for an extension would have been 1900 baht/year.

9 years overstay!!!! Oh dear! I guess this calls for Section 44 to be used for creating a special fitting punishment for this extremely stupid act.

...only if he had proof of sufficient funds.

Otherwise it's around 25k baht/year.

Yeah but you get parachute wings for jumping on a rubber rope from a wooden platform 12 m high.

Are we back to having to carry around our passport or get fined with all these spot checks?

Sorry, didn´t think about that. Yeah, you are right! I guess he will say he have no money and stay in IDC with a smile on his face. :cheesy:

This guy being lionized like Elliot  Ness.

Hilarious.

He's just doing what he's paid to do.

Actually,  he's not.

At his level anywhere else,  he'd be executive policing,  and his officers would be doing THEIR jobs.

Without fuss or fanfare.

Ah! I wondered why the lady teacher who runs the school cadet detachment wears para wings and a combat infantryman badge!?

Have they been walking around in black trousers slightly frayed at the bottom, washed out but carefully pressed short sleeve shirts, with inky fingers, carrying pads of those coloured smiley stickers that P1 and P2 love to get on their homework then?

Oh that's just rad.

Give the voice of sympathy on one hand , then snatch it back with the other.

There are a few foreigners that are of the criminal element the overstay their visa.

Most have thai wives and families to support so teach language  to do that. They don't have the 400000 needed to make a visa. Their language teaching and support of a Thai family is usually of great benefit to the development of the country. Most of the time the Thais are shooting themselves in the foot in this case scenario.

They are ?

Looks to me that they arrested someone who flouted immigration rules for 9 years.

Good for them.

Not sure you need to live in the shadows as such. I'm a younger guy and only got my passport checked once in 5 years of living there. Given Thai's respect for elders I'm guessing you could go forever without a random check.
