Government, public support pours in for abandoned Korat grandma

By The Nation

Government agencies and members of the pubic have stepped in to help a grandmother, 75, abandoned to care for her 9-year-old grandson by her son five years ago.

After her plight was widely shared and published, many people visited the ailing Manee Muakpha at her house in Nakhon Ratchasima to give her money, rice and dried foods, as well as other consumers’ goods.

Overwhelmed by the help, the grandma said she felt like she had been born again as the dried foods and necessities could help her and her grandson survive for several years.

Being too ill to work, Manee had tried to bring up her grandson on the monthly allowance of Bt800 and the state welfare card’s credit of Bt300 a month.

Her neighbours in Tambon Sema Yai in Korat’s Bua Yai district said they had never seen her son, the grandson’s father, visit her during the past five years.

Among agencies, the Nakhon Ratchasima Social Development and Human Security Office promised to pay her grandson, Pirapat Muakpha, Bt2,000 a month until he turns 18.

The Nakhon Ratchasima Reception House for homeless children and families committed to give the grandma Bt1,000 on occasion, and the Bua Yai district office gave the grandma Bt2,000 plus some necessities.

Nakhon Ratchasima governor Wichian Channothai also gave a bicycle to the boy so he could ride to school.

Manee thanked the agencies and the people for their help. But she said she is still waiting for her son to come back home soon. She has been unable to contact him since he left home to work in Bangkok five years ago.
