I still believe we can do it, says remorseful Worrawoot

It’s do or die for Thailand as they need to stun group B leader Uzbekistan on Sunday to remain in contention in the Asian Games football competition.

 

 A draw with Bangladesh in their second prelimnary on Thursday was a nightmare for national coach Worrawoot Srimaka, who needed that win to guarantee four points and a spot into the round of 16.

 

 With two straight draws, including a 1-1 tie in the opener with Qatar, Thailand are second in the group with two points behind the invincible eastern European team, who have so far spanked Bangladesh 3-0 and Qatar 6-0. 

 

The Kingdom must win only to secure a spot as Qatar are likely to see off Bangladesh.

 

“I take the blame for making some wrong decisions in my selections. Some players were injured, so I had to make some changes but it didn’t work out.

 

 “My sincere apologies for the result, which we did not expect. When we lost the first goal, we rushed things up and lost our momentum. Luckily we still managed to get a draw.

 

 “Playing in tournaments brings pressure in every match. We should take our time and wait for the right opportunity to move forward. It’s a lesson learned.”

 

 The Thai-Uzbekistan game kicks off at the Pakan Sari Stadium at 7pm on Sunday (Thailand and Indonesia time) and can be seen live on the Workpoint Channel.

 

 “The target is to win three points. There’s no turning back. We still believe. I already have some game plan to tackle with Uzbekistan,” Worrawoot  added.

 

 The Thai women are in the same situation as the men. 

 

They must beat Vietnam to reach the knockout stage after losing their opener 2-0 to Japan. History is not on their side, however - Thailand have never beaten Vietnam at an Asiad.
