Death toll of rare wild gaur cattle rises to 8 in Kanchanaburi

By The Nation

Two more bloated carcasses of gaurs were found in Kanchanaburi on Friday, bringing to eight the total number of the very rare wild cattle found dead near the Thung Yai Naresuan Wildlife Sanctuary.

The latest two bodies were found along Huay Rundee creek during a search by officials of the wildlife sanctuary and from Khao Laem National Park, along with troops and border patrol police.

Officials said the herd had about 15 to 20 gaurs and that at least some had apparently been washed over a cliff into the creek and drowned.

They said they would on Saturday burn the carcasses to prevent the spread of disease.

The officials checked upstream after villagers found four bloated carcasses along the creek in Moo 2 village in Tambon Laivo on Wednesday. Another two carcasses were found on Thursday.

None of the carcasses had gunshot wounds, leading officials to conclude that the eight gaurs drowned after water run-off washed them off the mountain and into the creek.
