I do want to extend my stay in Germany. My options

1. Extend my QR  return Ticket by say 1 mo. Cost about THB 50.000 , disadvantage =again tight to fixed date

2. Return unused ticket against some refund, buy one-way ticket FRA-BKK, advantage= time total flexibility.

I have zero experience with one-way tickets but read that it can be better priced than a return ticket

Any THoughts on this?

New to me.

For economy definitely not true except for some low cost carries that have per lag pricing.

Business: I did a simple example for Sep 18 (return Oct 2) for Lufthansa and Thai Air booked at airline.

Return:

LH 3246
TG 3588

One way:

LH 4186 (no typo !)
TG 2155

Depending on dates you can get FRA>BKK for around 40,000-50,000B

Whether it's worth doing will depend entirely on how much you will be charged for refunding the Qatar ticket.

The usual comparison sites will find them: Kayak, Skyscanner, Momondo, LastMinute, Opodo, Google Flights etc. You should try several for completeness.

Also check the individual airlines' websites as they may have sales on that are not included in the comparison results.

Exactly the opposite, one way tickets are never cheaper  than ½ the price of a return, as has been shown they can be much more expensive.

The only flight I've booked where they are not more expensive is SWMBO's upcoming flight to Japan on Airasia (other LCC's could be the same)

One way tickets are almost always more expensive then return tickets.

(Some budget airlines where pricing changes with every seat they sell might be cheaper)

Having worked all over the world for the last 30 years I have been flying on one way tickets for the last 30 years when traveling for work.

And it was outrageously expensive at times what the company paid for flights especially to remote areas.

There is also the additional problem depending on what nationality you have and which country you are traveling to - you might be refused boarding traveling on a one-way ticket if you cannot show the proper documentation / guaranty letters.

So you should check this out before traveling on one way tickets.
