Is Obesity a Very Serious Problem?
The few times a year that I ride the skytrain in Bangkok, I try and spend the time counting the number of locals that are overweight versus the number that are not overweight. I would say it is in the range of about 50%. Sometimes what we consider overweight visually may also not be the true picture. Locals are small people to begin with and many of them are not very tall. So it's very easy for them to exceed a healthy BMI index without it being so obvious to the eye. Next time you are in a place in Thailand where there is a group of people for a sustained period of time, and they aren't coming or going, then try and do some counting yourself. As the article says though, the problem is much higher in Bangkok than in the provinces. And Bangkok does account for around 15%-20% of the country's total population. -

A very simple process. If you can't manage to fill out a form and bring your vehicle registration along, best not to cross a land border and just fly or catch a bus or train. For Vientiane, you can catch a train from Bangkok and there's even an overnight cross-border bus service from Bangkok as well as from every major Isarn city starting from Khon Kaen and north of there. -

Agreed... the area we live in certainly makes a difference... .. not just on perceived risk of muggings, but also with things like stray dogs etc... As you pointed out, inside any moo-baan is perfectly safe, safety and security of the surrounding area of course varies depending on whats and who is there... Fortunately in Bangkok there is very little reason to be walking anywhere late at night because taxi's are so readily available.- 1
