Home wanted for lonely bird on Koh Phangan

Warning: The bird in this thread is of the feathered kind. ????

Almost one month ago a little Heron landed up in my back yard, blown in on strong winds, no doubt. It seemed to be a very young bird, just out of the nest (my guess). I am not sure of the sex but I have decided it is a female, just to make it simpler to refer to him/her...

I have been feeding her Mynah bird pellets, live mealworms, and any insects I can find. She gulps down the worms and even takes them from my hand, which I found out purely without trying! I do not want to tame this bird, she is free to fly and at night she leaves to roost in tall trees next door to me. I don't believe in caging birds, it must be the cruelest form of torture there is.

It has been a fantastic experience to spend so much time with a wild bird. However, I am concerned about a few things, mainly whether she is getting enough to eat as she never stops foraging and almost attacks me when I give her worms. Secondly, there are many stray cats around my area and they travel on roof tops where she likes to forage.

More than anything, I would like to find a good home for her, with her own kind; far away from people.

So, if anyone on KP knows of a suitable, safe place frequented by similar birds, I would appreciate knowing.

I have almost 100 photos, videos - what an amazing creature ????

What a great story!

I hope that she finds a good home or catches up with the flock next year..

I once nursed a young lorikeet-the tyrant of all tyrants- but one day he cocked his head..looked up and joined the crowd overhead..

I hope he made it.

I loved the Lorikeets in Sydney when I last visited a friend in 2004 - they would wake me in the mornings, demanding bread with syrup!

My Aussie friend, with the two tamest wild Loris I came across:

Yes..

My lorikeet had a personality split between Attila the Hun and Charlie Chaplin..my goodness he was entertaining..

It was  strange seeing him fly away..

After a bit more research, I discovered the real identity of this bird, it is a (very common) White-breasted Waterhen (Amaurornis phoenicurus).

I realised it is not a Heron after seeing a huge "Blue Heron", at the main petrol station in Thongsala of all places. It lives quite happily with chickens in the large cages to one side of the forecourt... Worth having a look but be warned - it looks more like a vulture than a Heron ????

Not as exotic as I first thought, but still a very pleasant little bird to have around, so much so I have decided to let her stay as long as she likes.

Thanks for the number, sticky. I may still contact Alan later if she starts looking lonely or unhappy...
