Those Long Red Sticks / Branches That Students Carry?

Sometimes it's the simple things that bother you the most, so I have to ask... What are those, (mostly red), long sticks / branches that the school supply stores sell and you see the students carrying on certain days when going to and from school, used for????

I have asked my wife and she does not seem to know....

You may find that this is a Stave connected to Scouting because Students at Schools become Scouts as well and on Certain days they have to attend school in Scout uniform and looking very smart

Asked my husband, he said it was for Boy Scouts but sorry, its been too long to remember
