At a guess it's not so much 'not entered their little grey cells', but the Buddhist 'not killing' influence probably comes into it.

I can see there would be a public outcry over it - not that I'm defending it.

It is fairly obvious that many on here are so narrow minded and ignorant of the facts that they are incapable of acknowledging the bigger picture.

Strays did used to be dealt with until international do gooders started interfering, those that want someone to blame should be looking in a different direction. Do you really think that if nothing had ever been done in the past the country would not already have more animals than humans.

The government is taking action but most on here are ignorant of the steps being taken in the background. The registration scheme is the right way to go but they jumped in without considering all the potential problems. People should have been offered incentive to register rather than penalised. My wife and her sister run a voluntary sanctuary for abandoned animals and currently have over 60 cats and 9 dogs. Every one of them has been sterilised and vaccinated at our own expense so the initial proposal would have been a bit of a challenge.

A sensible option would be free registration for those pets that have already been sterilized, and they must wear a collar (& Id).  If you have an unsterilized pet (eg. if you're a specialist breeder), then you need to pay a small registration fee but still need a collar & id.

Any dogs or cats caught without a collar should be destroyed immediately. Those with ID can be returned to the owner on payment of a fine or the animal gets destroyed.

It also get's around the problems when a dog causes an injury or accident of "Who's dog?"

If 450 Baht is enough to make someone abandon their pets, then they never cared much for them anyway. What is it with Thais and their lack of care toward animals?

Thais show little care towards any pet that costs them money...

The only benefit of Soi dogs is that they provide a free alarm warning of strangers.. otherwise Thais would have got rid of them years ago!!

Place a registration fee on each animal and watch the streets or temples swell with strays...

5 million could be reached in 5 minutes of the bill being passed !!!!
